Meet Chad Might

We were lucky to catch up with Chad Might recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I believe in myself when obstacles come my way. Often, as a Freelance Photographer, I can go weeks or even months without work, My secret resilience has been with me at a very young age, always reminding myself this is what God wants me to do, and also never giving up.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Throughout my photography career, I have focused a lot on commercial photography, with goals of looking at the amount of money earned at various jobs. Admitting this, I was almost in a trap, allowing the American dollar to top over my true love and art of photography. Only within the last 11 years, I placed my love and passion of photography over looking at the amount of what each job can make. I now feel like I came full circle with placing a main focus onto Nature Photography, and making prints onto metal. I still do commercial work, but now focus on capturing God’s light instead of thinking more in terms of profit and a job like environment.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, one of the simplest qualities was to always bring a camera with me, wherever I went. This could be as silly as meeting friends at a park, or going on a random drive and pulling over whenever I saw a potential photo opportunity. Another skill was to start taking photography classes early, in highschool, and volunteering after classes to push your skills and learn more. Lastly, forcing myself to go to college, even though my highschool grades were terrible, and gaining knowledge in all fields of photography has taught me to really think outside of my box and push my limits beyond what I thought was possible. My advice to early photographers would be to never stop learning and start the process early with school and classes. This will force you to have a camera in your hand throughout the week, and to get more skills to achieve the end result of being a professional photographer.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

As of right now, my biggest obstacle is figuring out how to show my nature photography metal prints, where to display them, and how to market them. My goal in life is not to be a millionaire, and to not allow the love of photography become fogged over by money. With that being said, I realize we must make money to survive, the challenging part for me is to create a healthy balance with the love of photography and making a living.
