Chanda , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Having a golf brand that is for women and owned by a Woman of color is a double edged sword. Females are already far behind their male counterparts in the sport and we are struggling to break down the barriers in this golf space. As a woman of color launching a successful golf apparel brand it is even more difficult. I find myself having to embrace my uniqueness, so instead of trying to conform to the norm or expectations of others, I always celebrate what makes me different. I also believe in building a support network with those who understand and appreciate my background. These people serve as mentors and are like-minded individuals that can provide support and encouragement.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Swing Chic Golf Apparel offers clothing that is fashionable and functional. Our clothing gives women the confidence need to hit the course. Besides our clothing, we strive to put a golf club in the hands of as many people as possible, in hopes of making this game more inclusive. Swing Chic is also aligned with Girls Golf Coweta and I serve as the Site Director for our Chapter. We are helping young girls learn how to play golf and develop skills they can use on and off the course. These skills include strategies to overcome challenges, critical thinking, mindfulness training, etc. Swing Chic also helped to develop an adaptive golf program for a local day program for adults with intellectual disabilities. Keeping with our efforts to play it forward, we have sponsored some female collegiate golfers who will be attending Savannah State this fall. Swing Chic Golf is more than just an apparel brand, it is a lifestyle. We hope to not only provide fashionable women golf apparel, but to grow the game as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Persistence-Do not be discouraged by setbacks or challenges. Use them as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Be proactive and create opportunities-Take charge of your own success and seek out new opportunities instead of waiting for them to come your way.

Develop your skills-Learn as much as you can so you can excel in your filed, The more confidence and knowledge you have, the more likely you will succeed.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed I take a step back and re prioritize. I have a habit of tackling too many tasks at once so block scheduling and figuring out what tasks needs immediate attention versus those I can do later helps me to get back on track.
I also try to completely step away and clear my mind with meditation or exercise. It feels good to clear my mind and work out any tensions I may be feeling.
Lastly, golf is an amazing sport that helps you whenever you feel overwhelmed with work tasks because you can play by yourself and you are outside with nature. Golf has numerous health and mental benefits, including anxiety and depression management.
