We were lucky to catch up with Chandy Vang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chandy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My desire to help others comes from a deep, dark, and sad place in my soul. I believe this to be an ancestral wounding that I’ve carried my whole life that has never been healed through an orphan wound from my father and of my people. My Hmong lineage is from a people who have been displaced for centuries from Chinese ancient civilization to the mountainous regions of Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and all over Southeast Asia. Therefore, this lifetime I have endured a very troublesome childhood and have been searching and yearning for a deep desire to heal myself and those around me who have endured generational trauma and ancestral wounding but it had to start with me, first.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Professionaly, by day I am a licensed drug and alcohol counselor and mental health professional. I have been clinically and academically trained in these spaces but the longer I worked in these spaces, the further I moved away from my purpose. I wasn’t reaching my intended audience and it did not resonate with my spirit. My spiritual journey took me through a lot of soul searching, getting outside my comfort zone, and taking risks. My intentions were to bring healing back to my Hmong community and though I do not disagree with Western and clinical practices, my work as an energy/reiki healer reached my community first before my clinical profession. I believe this to be because we are a very collective and spiritual community. Our innate healing starts within our spirit which I am now starting to understand that my guides have been leading me to see this all along. So, this past year I have extended myself to start facilitating group healings, workshops, and retreats. It’s been an exciting year thus far networking, connectingm and putting together the necessary work to help my community heal but it is so worth it.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I will share the naive mistakes I made along the way as advice. I have learned that not everyone on a spiritual journey have my best interest but in hindsight, I also understand it was my journey to learn. Therefore, choose wisely:
1. Do not let others project to you what is not true to your heart. Only you know yourself best. Starting a spiritual journey can be very daunting but you must know yourself VERY well to know the difference between a projection and an advice.
2. Practice detachment. The sooner you learn this, the easier life becomes. It frees you from the Ego, expectations, taking things personal, time, etc. and thus we surrender and become FREE.
3. We are our own BEST healers. Don’t give so much of your power away to others. Everyone is just passing through the chapters of our stories. True healing lies within and our bodies are super intelligent. We have the innate ability to access this medicine if we just slow down, be present, and truly listen to what we need.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Growing up, I didn’t have the best relationship with my parents. As an adult navigating my spiritual journey, my parents have been with me every second of the way. I have 5 years sober from alcohol and that was when my spiritual journey really took off. My guides started really showing themselves to me and I was starting to trust in my intuition. I was having a lot of spiritual experiences with my third eye, my senses became super heightened, and sometimes I would become spiritually sick. I shared a lot of my stories with my folks and they took the time to listen to me, help me, and they even sought out other healers to heal me as well as join in on a few spiritual ceremonies. They even buy me statues of my guides and fruits to place on my alter. It has come around full circle to me that my parents and I were meant to be on this journey together. I couldn’t be anymore blessed and happier with their loving support along the way. We really healed each other through my spiritual journey and it’s been the best, beautiful gift.
