We recently connected with Chanel Bresette and have shared our conversation below.
Chanel, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
From a young age I was obsessed with all things color! I grew up a Lisa Frank gal and I needed all things color in my life. Color is what brought me joy in life. Growing up, I thought it would be so fun to be a “party planner” and get to execute themed parties and basically bring color to my life with my career. But I didn’t know quite how to break into that career path. Out of high school I had a hard time deciding what career path to take. I started with early childhood education, then to biology, and then finally completed my associates degree in Veterinary Technology. I enjoyed my career as a veterinary technician so much! I loved working with animals and the medical side of it all. It brought me a lot of joy. I became a mom in 2019 and that started a whole new journey in life. My son is my world! He was diagnosed at 2 years old with autism and that came with its own challenges. But if he isn’t the most amazing, smart and kind little boy! I had to cut back on my career as a vet tech due to my husbands schedule and taking my son to therapies. Taking a step back from my career and becoming a mom, I feel like I lost myself a little. I didn’t quite know what I liked anymore and what my purpose was. I started playing around with balloon artistry for my sons birthdays and really found a love for it. One day I decided to start making a little money on the side with my balloon art. I said it was a “little side gig” and to see where it went. Little did I know that it would change my world. My little side gig has turned into a full blown business. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d run my own business. But here I am living my best life. I get to make my own schedule, be home with my family, and do something I love. I’ve finally found my dream job. Working with color, creating and bringing joy to people with balloons! Who would have thought I’d fall into the world of balloons!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I consider myself a balloon stylist. I don’t make balloon animals or dress up as a clown! I create customized balloon decor to fit each event! Bouquets, garland, full backdrops and more. I create designs for birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, graduation parties, corporate events and so much more! I work with clients every step of the way to pick out colors, designs, backdrop walls, decals, and any other little details to make their setup unique. I’m all about adding my own personal touch to every setup!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Practice, practice, PRACTICE!!! My first year of business I did not make much money and it was focused on improving my skills and building my portfolio. Even now I’m still constantly improving my technique and learning new things. Watch YouTube, follow other balloon artists and take classes! It’s also incredibly helpful to get to know other balloon artists in your area. There is so much business to go around that I don’t see others as competitors. We can cheer each other on and help each other when needed.
Lastly, don’t quit. There will be slow times and it makes you question everything. I’ve wanted to quit many times because I’m worried I’m not good enough. Don’t let the self doubt get to you! You are good enough and will only get better the more you do!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The people who have been the most helpful in overcoming challenges in this industry are those who also are in this industry, other balloon artists! Seeing other balloons artists share their stories (good and bad) helps to improve your way of thinking. You also learn so much by watching other artists on social media!
