We recently connected with Channel Jamil and have shared our conversation below.
Channel, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by exploring different aspects of life. Mentally, I find inspiration through reading self-help books whenever I can. Artistically, I make a point to listen to all types of music and keep an open mind to new sounds and visuals. Recently, I started reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, a book I discovered after hearing J. Cole talk about it in an interview. So far, it’s taught me that creativity thrives through action, not perfection. It’s not about achieving perfection but about the act of consistently digging and discovering the “diamonds” along the way, making the journey itself deeply rewarding.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an artist focused on creating immersive, multi-dimensional experiences through music, visual art, and storytelling. My journey started with a love for exploring different genres and art forms, leading me to develop a unique style that combines elements of lofi, hip-hop, and jazz. Through my work, I aim to evoke emotions and create atmospheres that feel both personal and universal.
What excites me most about what I do is the opportunity to connect with people on a deep, introspective level. Whether through my collaboration with FTB Music Group on lofi albums like Festival Reverie, inspired by the magic of festivals, and the Jazzi-Fi series, which incorporates jazzy vibes, or the artwork I create for people to enjoy in their spaces, I’m passionate about crafting experiences that bring calm, nostalgia, and creativity to those who interact with my art.
Recently, I launched a new book through Dreamworld Art titled DREAMWORLD: The All-in-One Guide to Your Creative Power. Designed for songwriters and creatives, this book offers ample space for writing songs, practical guides on music theory like scales and chords, and 100 writing prompts to help overcome writer’s block. It’s a hands-on resource to keep the creative flow going and unlock new perspectives.
In addition to my music and book, I’ve been developing a collection of artwork available in various formats, including canvas, wooden and metallic prints, phone cases, and tote bags. I believe art should be part of our everyday routine, and I’m excited to keep expanding these offerings, making creative expressions more accessible and personal for people everywhere.
This year, my artwork has also been featured through a collaboration with Robohood, a traveling art gallery that brings AI-driven and traditional art to new audiences. My pieces have been showcased at notable venues and events, including the Aventura Hilton Miami in October and November, the Shanghai China International Industry Fair in September, and the Thrive Art District Art Walk in Fort Lauderdale from August to September, where they were displayed alongside a 16×24-inch Harley Quinn piece created with Robohood’s layered painting technique. Earlier in the year, my work was showcased at the ArtServe “New and Improved” Exhibition in Fort Lauderdale, featuring a live-painted AI-generated image and a panel on AI and technology in art.
Collaborating with partners like Robohood, @1101contemporary, and @arte_miro has allowed me to push the boundaries of art and technology, creating pieces that resonate across diverse cultural and artistic spaces.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, the three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, curiosity, and creativity.
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks is crucial in any creative field. I’ve faced numerous challenges, whether it was creative blocks, project rejections, or logistical hurdles. Embracing resilience means viewing failures as learning opportunities rather than roadblocks. My advice for those just starting out is to develop a mindset that allows you to learn from mistakes. Keep pushing forward, even when things don’t go as planned.
Curiosity: Staying open to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives has fueled my growth as an artist. This quality has led me to explore different genres of music and art, which has enriched my own work. For early-career creatives, I recommend actively seeking out new experiences—attend workshops, collaborate with others, and don’t hesitate to experiment. Curiosity can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
Creativity: Of course, nurturing your creativity is essential. It’s important to make time for creative practice, whether that’s through writing, painting, or any form of expression. Early in your journey, establish a routine that prioritizes creativity. Set aside time daily or weekly for your craft, and don’t worry about perfection. The act of creating regularly will help you develop your unique voice and style over time.
In summary, embrace resilience to overcome obstacles, nurture your curiosity to explore new avenues, and commit to regular creative practice. These qualities will serve as strong foundations for anyone looking to grow in their artistic journey.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Life Experiences: Life itself has played a significant role in shaping my perspective and resilience. The challenges I’ve faced, whether personal or professional, have taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and adaptability. Each experience has contributed to my growth, reminding me that setbacks can often lead to new opportunities.
Collaborative Peers: Collaborating with other creatives has been crucial to my development. Working alongside talented individuals with brands such as Spreadlove, 13E, and FTB Music Group has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and expand my skills. The feedback and support I’ve received from these collaborations have not only improved my craft but also fostered a sense of community that motivates me to keep pushing forward.
Inspirational Figures: Finally, the work of artists I admire has been a constant source of inspiration. Whether it’s through their music, art, or writing, seeing how they tackle challenges and express their creativity encourages me to keep honing my own skills. Their journeys remind me that success comes in many forms and that perseverance is key.
