Meet Chantel Sings

We were lucky to catch up with Chantel Sings recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chantel , we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

I really love this question because I think more conversations need to be had to shed more light on Mental health issues and conditions.

I was diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and Anxiety disorder some years ago. It all came from childhood trauma, which most mental health issues usually develop from and also from an unfortunate situation that happened in my 20’s. I also developed PTSD from my experience with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 23.

There are days that my mental health issues literally have a direct effect on my day to day operations. I can get really exhausted at times with trying to manage my conditions and live as normal a life as possible. Mostly people like myself tend to deal with our mental health issues quietly. I never really talk to too many people about what it’s like because I don’t know that very many people will understand what I go through everyday. I am not ashamed though. I have learned that these issues developed through unfortunate life situations and not because of something that I did wrong.
I feel like in my community, there is a strong stigma about mental health issues. I don’t think it’s discussed enough or even dealt with enough.

I found that in order for me to be able to move forward in my life, I can’t just brush off my conditions. I had to find WAYS to deal and to heal. I started seeing a Mental health therapist in 2016. I realized during my therapy, I had so many unresolved issues that also led to my mental health issues. I learned to understand these issues and to except them. I had to let out all that was bottled up inside of me, including hidden anger that I never knew I had!
Mental heath therapy felt freeing and safe for me to work on my issues and to be better. I believe that PRAYER, support from my loved ones and Mental health therapy brought me to the healthier me that I am today.
Everyday is STILL a challenge, but as time goes on, you learn to MANAGE through the triggers and find ways to not let your issues overtake you. I always say, just like you go to the gym for your physical health, for me, going to therapy is very similar but for my mental health.

I have been in Mental health therapy now for almost 10 years. I’ve never taken a break from it and I am truly grateful for my doctor and all she’s done for me. Thank you Toni!

God is real.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a professional singer and have been actively performing and recording for almost 2 decades.
I’ve been on the radio for almost 15 years as a Morning show host and Production Director where I voice and produce most of the content that goes on the air. I have recently completed my first children’s book called “BILLY LIKES TO BULLY” and it will be available April 21st 2025!
I perform regularly with The R factor band who have been established for over 20 years and has been named one of the top wedding bands in Minnesota over the past 10 years.
I am also invited to host live events, galas, and to moderate discussions regularly.

I’m truly grateful for all of the opportunities God has given me and I have much more coming!
I want thank my following and all those who continue to support my journey.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I don’t believe that I would be alive and anywhere close to any amount of success if I didn’t have my FAITH in God, resilience, and a really strong work ethic!

What I realize is that in your journey to accomplish your dreams and goals, not everybody will understand or maybe even support it because it’s simply not THEIR journey, it’s YOURS.
Sometimes, it can be a lonely road because you can’t always find the time to explain to the people you care for why their support is so necessary and so important to you.

My advice to those earlier in the journey would be some of the same things I tell my son. You have to talk to God. You have to ask God to reveal to you your passion, help you find your passion and purpose. Once you find your passion and purpose and figure out how you want to move forward with it, I believe doors will start to open but you have to also be ready to do the work!
Nothing will come easy and people will not always believe in you. You have to find a way to keep competing with YOURSELF.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Rest.

I have learned to just STOP when I feel burnt out. And simply rest.
I have a lot of responsibilities and commitments.
But, if I don’t take the time to take care of me, how can I take care of anything else?

These days, rest is truly very underrated!
