Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charity Godfrey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charity, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
The way I am able to overcome imposter syndrome is by living through my values. Value driven living has taught me that if I know who I am through what I believe, I will not feel that I am not worthy of counseling clients. As an example, one of my values is truth. So if I am with a client and I do not know the answer, I simply state “good question, I’d like to process that further and get back to you as I am unsure.” When I use truth as my value I do not use perfection as a defense mechanism to answering clients because that is not a true representative of what I stand for. Perfectionism is a false sense of self that exasperates imposter syndrome. So, living a value driven life, both personally and professionally, has lead to deeper connections with clients because I am authentically representing who I am.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
One year ago I completed a national Christian certification course. Working with churches has brought so much joy and lightness to my counseling days. It is with the Christian counseling education that I am able to help clients heal through love and understanding of God’s purpose for them. The clients and I build a strong therapeutic relationship through God’s words and we use scripture to combat untruths and to provide a stronger self through the eyes of God. The journey of Christian counseling has afforded me the opportunity to teach clients that they matter and that they are already enough.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking over my career having a mentor, using my personality, and a collaborative mindset has been keys for sustained success in the field. For anyone getting into the field I would suggest these three strategies as tools for success.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful lesson my mother shared with me as a young child was to have a circle of friendships that was wide and diverse. I am thankful that my mother shared this with me. Her words have helped shape friendships and collaborations that have enriched my life and caused me to grow.
