Meet Charity Murray

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charity Murray. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charity below.

Hi Charity , appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

My self discipline comes from my mother Latrese Morgan-Sims. She is an independent alpha female who instilled hard work, discipline, the value of education, and the motto “Work for everything you heart wants, needs, and desire.”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As a cosmetologist specializing in locs formerly known as dreadlocks, I offer a unique blend of traditional techniques and modern styles to help clients achieve their desired look while maintaining healthy hair. What’s most exciting is the ability to transform someone’s appearance and boost their confidence through the art of locs. It’s not just about creating a hairstyle; it’s about celebrating individuality and cultural expression. I’m always exploring new methods and products to ensure the best care for my clients’ hair. I’m also planning to launch a new line of organic dreadlock care products and host workshops to educate people about locs maintenance and styling.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Patience and Precision: Loc styling requires meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work patiently. It’s crucial to take your time, ensuring each lock is perfectly formed and secure. For those starting out, practice on mannequin heads or willing friends to hone your skills and develop a steady hand.

2. Continuous Learning: The beauty industry is ever-evolving, so staying updated with the latest techniques and trends is essential. Attend workshops, watch online tutorials, and experiment with different styles to broaden your knowledge. Don’t be afraid to try new things and adapt your approach as needed.

3. Communication and Empathy: Building a strong rapport with clients is key to understanding their needs and preferences. Listen attentively to their concerns, offer personalized advice, and create a comfortable environment where they feel valued. Effective communication fosters trust and loyalty, leading to long-term relationships.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

“The Concise Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene has been instrumental in my development, offering profound insights into human behavior and social dynamics. I believe this book has helped me understand people and decipher the type of clients I want to attract.

1. Master Your Emotional Self: Greene emphasizes the importance of understanding and controlling one’s emotions to make rational decisions. As he writes, “The most effective attitude to adopt is one of supreme self-control. Never let emotions influence your strategic thinking.” This has helped me approach situations with a clear mind, avoiding impulsive reactions that ultimately can effect my overall brand

2. See Through People’s Masks: The book teaches how to decipher people’s true intentions by observing their actions and nonverbal cues. Greene advises, “Pay attention to people’s actions, not their words.” This has enabled me to navigate relationships with greater awareness and discernment.

3. Determine the Strength of Your Character: The books highlights the significance of understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses to build resilience and integrity. He states, “The better you understand yourself, the more you can manage your weaknesses.” This self-awareness has been crucial in personal growth and decision-making.
