We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charles Buckingham and Brisa Chacon Na a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charles Buckingham and Brisa Chacon, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I was quite lucky to fall into my current profession. I was in the Army prior to becoming a hypnotist and I was in intelligence. It was suggested to me that hypnosis would be a good thing to learn because “Its Mind Control”, which seemed like a useful skill to have for the work.
As I studied hypnosis, I learned that it is in fact, not mind control. It is actually a tool I use to help people gain control of their own minds. When I came to Colorado, Brisa and I started going to a hypnosis practice group in Denver. The scope was more for the fun of it and doing demonstrations. At that point it was kind of just a fun thing to do.
Then Robert, the head of the group, suggested we check out a hypnosis convention in Las Vegas, Hypnothoughts Live. Hypnothoughts was just the best experience I had had, and it was the catylist for me choosing to become a professional hypnotist.
Hypnosis is not necessarily my purpose, but it is the primary tool I use for my purpose which is helping people be successful in achieving their goals. Whether someone wants to stop smoking or be a better public speaker or perhaps experience a past life for spiritual growth, hypnosis is fantastic for getting people their desired results.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
One of our primary focuses is personal empowerment. Most people have things they would like to change in their lives. Many people find that when they go to make the change, they have habits, thoughts and beliefs that make that change very difficult. With hypnosis we can help them change the way they think and feel about those issues which helps them create a shift in their behavior as well. And when we change our behavior, we are becoming that person we want to be.
One of the more exciting events we are working on are our group sessions. We see a lot of clients one on one in our office with great success, but it takes a lot of time to help a lot of people this way. Our office is really more set up for that personal setting. Recently we have teamed up with a few metaphysical stores (Celestial Salt and Salt Vault), in town who have space we can use to work with groups of people. We will soon be setting up group sessions at both of these venues. One of the group sessions is a past life regression experience. Here I guide the group into hypnosis and then back through time to lives their soul has lived prior to this one. Brisa will be doing group sessions for people who experience anxious feelings or stress when they drive. They will be geared towards helping people feel more at ease while driving so they can feel great while doing what they need to do.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience – I think patience is a skill everyone should learn. When dealing with other people being patient will help with rapport building and give you the ability to come to an agreement. Difficult situations come up all the time and if you lose it, you may turn away from an opportunity because you didn’t see the simple answer immediately.
Meditation – I started meditating around the time I started studying hypnosis and I do it pretty consistently. Meditation is like going to the gym, one time isn’t going to do much for you but if you do it consistently you will notice a difference. Meditation has helped me develop my patience quite a bit. It has taught me to take a step back when things aren’t going great so I can observe my thoughts and feelings instead of just get lost in them.
Running a business is not the same as knowing how to do a thing – When I got certified to be a hypnotist, I opened an office and waited for people to come flooding in. It didn’t happen quite that way. Over time I built a website, learned about advertising, started attending networking and sales events. You don’t necessarily need to know everything about running a business to start a business but you will need to continue to learn about running a business to stay in business.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I really liked “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. It was the first book that got me thinking about money and assets. I think the biggest take away was to use your jobs to learn and make a living for now, but use some of the money you make to actually build your wealth.
