Meet Charles Jeans

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles Jeans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Charles, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
My mental health and well being is something I still struggle with. I spent a lot of time alone as a kid and teenager which taught me to internalize and stay inside my head so to speak. It’s a coping mechanism I haven’t kicked unfortunately. I was raised to not complain, nobody wants to hear you’re having a hard time, everyone’s got problems. Unfortunately this is also something a lot of men have been told also, which truly has lead to a crisis in men’s mental health regardless of age. Trying to white knuckle through pain, trauma, anxiety and depression is more common than I believed. I recently began sharing parts of my past (something I’ve never done) and it’s helped me to reflect and process things I’ve been through. My hope with that, is to also help other people to share their struggles and show anyone that needs to hear it, that they are not alone in their feelings.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a residential home inspector and I own an inspection company called Safe House Home Inspectors. Our entire goal is to help solve problems. The home buying process can be a stressful time for people, so we developed a way to solve as many stressful situations during that process as we can. We brought every inspection need in house, and offer packages for home buyers that continue to support and benefit them throughout the entire life of ownership of their home. We even kept the buyers agents in mind when making strategic partnerships that make their life easier. Buyers agents that work with us can now have the entire inspection process completed in 24 hrs, BINSR included! We have also benefited greatly from the people we work with, we are lucky enough to get to work with some of the best Realtors in the state.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
By far the most important is the ability to constantly learn. No two homes are exactly the same, and buyers needs change. We have focused on adapting and learning so anything we encounter we can process and I think that’s why we have grown so quickly. Secondly and just as important is attention to detail and honesty. A home inspectors attention to detail is what distinguishes a great home inspector. You need to be able to recognize things that don’t normally catch the eye, you are providing information to help someone make the largest investment of their lives! Honesty for me kind of blends with communication. Home inspectors have a really bad stereo type of communicating negatively to a home buyer and scaring them away from a house. I’m not saying paint everything with rainbows but there is a way to communicate your findings with an already terrified and stressed buyer that doesn’t make it seam like the house is going to fall over and explode!

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I’ve thought a lot about this subject and it goes back to my own personal growth. As a business man and a very stubborn man I’ve always felt I had to do everything myself. It is an exhausting and stressful way to operate a business. My biggest struggle has been to delegate and let go of the reins, trust my team and let them do what they do best. I have incredible people at Safe House, and we are growing. The growth of my company is coinciding with my own personal growth, so I’m really trying to stay present and enjoy the process.
