Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Charles Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Charles, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by staying true to creating real music. I’m always staying authentic to my sound while pushing boundaries. That helps me maintain my artistic vision and keeps the music fresh.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Charles Wright, and I’m perhaps best known for leading the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. I was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, but moved to Los Angeles when I was young. That’s where I really got involved in the music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. My work, blending soul, funk, and R&B, has helped shape modern music, and I’m proud to be counted among its pioneers. My most recent music release, “Follow Your Spirit” is available on all music platforms. It’s a positive song that everyone young and old can listen to and enjoy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
my advice is to really dive into learning and playing real instruments. There’s something special about understanding the nuances of a guitar, keyboard, or drums that digital tools alone can’t fully capture. Mastering an instrument gives you a solid foundation to express yourself authentically and adds depth to your music.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One book that has really influenced me is my own, “Up From Where We’ve Come”. It tells the story of my journey and the challenges I’ve faced along the way. I’m also excited about my upcoming book, Express Yourself, which delves even deeper into my life and musical journey. In both books, I share lessons about resilience, authenticity, and the importance of staying true to your musical roots. You can find Up From Where We’ve Come on Amazon, and I hope it offers some valuable insights and inspiration for anyone on their own journey.
