We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlie Angel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
The source of my generosity comes from God and the universe. I am nothing without the source and I’m innately blessed with understanding how kindness works in this world. This isn’t short of any mistakes that we all make in life, but I’d say that those experiences, along with seeing harm done in the world, are what help me to produce generosity throughout my life. After seeing so many people get mistreated and the state of the world, kindness becomes the soil for growth, a shield of good faith, and a translator for the heart. I’ve been lucky enough to meet great people and also witness what it means to be a good person, so I follow those structures to the best of my ability. I would add that my generosity grows from a ton of shadow work, giving myself grace, and being honest with integrity at the forefront of all of my choices. It’s through learning how to be my very own friend that I can further understand the existence of kindness and how to live within it, share it, and teach others how to do the same. It all starts with how kind and honest you choose to be with yourself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an artist, one of many styles. I’m a poet of life, experience, and unconditional love. Those are my motivations in all of my creations and the character I carry in life. In the most practical sense, I am a poet, a songwriter, a dancer, and a wordsmith. My inspiration began at a young age when I watched artists like Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Queen Latifah share their crafts with the world. I began dancing at the age of 4 from watching many Janet and Beyoncé videos, while my songwriting aspirations stemmed from listening to hours of Rihanna as a pre-teen and throughout high school. I’d written poetry in middle school, and I taught myself the correct structure for most songs you hear on the radio when I was a sophomore in college. I wrote my first song after the death of a loved one, a lover.
I began recording music as an official artist in 2021 when I released my first album ‘Hard 2 Luv’, a very sentimental project during a time of turmoil in my life. I had been using the name Charlie Angel for my poetry, since the 12th grade, but decided it fit me most in my artistry. Slightly before music became my main art, I used to draw every day in college and soon, I stopped to focus on music but incorporated visual art in all of my releases by working with other creatives. When it comes to motivations, the love of expressing my deepest feelings and memories resonates with me. I like to be authentic in my creative process, going based on what I’ve felt the most in that timeframe. Understanding that other people around the world could relate and feel seen, is the reason why I create the art that I do. I love being in community with others, connecting to their stories, and helping them feel loved and seen. I believe that creating art is one of the quickest and everlasting ways to do so. My art is a story of love, joy, and conquering fear taking over the world and replacing hatred, agony, and selfishness.
This year, I’ve been accepted into Tiny Desk’s performance competition, I have my first New York show in May, and I’m helping my God brothers fulfill their career goals.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey, I would have to say that honesty, grace, and perseverance were three qualities that defined my journey as a creative and as a person. Some of the most creative and impactful people face the most struggles in their journey to success. And, you have to be your biggest supporter. Being able to hold yourself accountable with your choices, knowing whether or not something reflects the best parts of your creativity, and feeling confident enough to start over, are all so important in this life journey. It’s also vital to give yourself grace, whenever your efforts aren’t perfect. Imperfection is what beautifully defines us as people and what brings about the best results to anything. You have to be able to see yourself and still love what’s in front of you–somehow, some way. It’s equally important that you do not give up on yourself. I have learned through trial and error that the best results come when you fail. Failing by a means of not perfecting things on the first try, is not even really failure. It’s growth. You get a chance to revisit your methods and experiment, getting comfortable with who you want to be, what you want to say, and how you want people to feel when they witness a part of you. Life is not linear and neither will your creations be. Make it anyway, try anyway, fail anyhow! It’ll make you so much better in the end and you’ll be thankful that you never stopped giving it your all. Take a risk on yourself!
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
As of right now, I am a struggling artist, to be frank. I am now out of equipment to record and the financial backing that goes into creating a song or video is costly and out of budget for me. I am doing my best to stay consistent in my song-making and persevering. I believe with those resources, I could create a legacy for myself that’s undeniable and heavily influential.
