We recently connected with Charlie Dickie and have shared our conversation below.
Charlie, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose through becoming sober. Sobriety is the most important thing in my life today. It makes me who I am. It has showed me how to be a good person, and what my primary purpose is in this world. Sobriety has shown me the importance of being of service to others in this world. Whether that’s sharing my story on how I got sober, or simply holding the door open for another person. Life is all about love and selflessness. Without my sobriety, I wouldn’t have anything that I have today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Since childhood, my love for photography grew by exploring my father’s gear. It led to earning a cinema arts bachelor’s degree at Lindenwood University, fueling my ongoing passion for cinematography and artistic growth.
As an Emmy award winning DP, photographer, and storyteller currently based in South Lake Tahoe, my work has taken me all across the country where I have documented stories from hunting to regenerative agriculture. Through my travel and people that I have met along the way, I have gained valuable perspectives that I aim to share with the world through my creative storytelling.
Having recently moved from Minneapolis to South Lake Tahoe, CA, I am currently working on building a portfolio in action/adventure sports. I am an avid snowboarder, runner, and biker. Being able to combine my love for cinematography with these sports is a dream come true.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Have an open mind. Be open to adopting new ideas that could help you as a creative/person. This has been crucial for me as a creative. Adopting new ways of looking at things helps me grow. If I’m always stuck doing the same things I’ve always done, then I’ll continue to stay stagnant.
2) Be an ambitious person. The only constant in life is change. As a creative I’m always looking to improve in an area that I lack in. But it’s important to tackle one thing at a time, one day at a time. Overwhelming yourself with multiple tasks at a time will create stress and work quality will decrease.
3) Be present with whatever you’re doing. The only time we have is now. This is one the most valuable things to me as a creative. If I’m stuck thinking into the future or past, then I am unable to produce my best work. A good way for me to center myself throughout my work day is to walk away from things. Whenever I feel “stuck,” I’ll go do something else to take my mind away from the project. When I come back, I’m usually able to hop right back into things and work much faster.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
A book that has played an important role in my development as a human is, ‘The Untethered Soul: A Journey Beyond Yourself,’ By Michael Alan Singer. I am currently reading this book, and it has showed me the importance of healing your inner self. Just like any other human in this world, I’ve dealt with my fair share of trials and tribulations. This book has showed me that there’s a way through it all if one can look within. Everyone has the ability to heal as long as they’re willing to do the work.
A few of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom that I have taken:
“Every experience makes you a greater person if you don’t resist it.”
“Every single moment of your life, you are either naturally enjoying what is or letting go of what’s keeping you from enjoying what is. If you let go of the wants and fears that are limiting you, you’ll always be okay.”
