We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlie White a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity originally stems from the relationship I have with my mother. Growing up, she would always give me extra lunch money for school. If another kid couldn’t afford something to eat, I could help them. I later found out the reason she did that was because often times she was the kid who went without. At a very early age I was taught selflessness, and in turn, I learned generosity. You give not because you have to, but because you want to. You should always want to make the world around you just a little bit brighter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am curently focusing heavily on my business The Char Network. At TCN, we partner with businesses to market, manage and develop their products and services. This also includes website development, custom marketing collateral, graphic design work and social media strategy. I am passionate about helping other businesses grow! I have the privilege of working with organizations within the mental health field, such as Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders and eating disorder dietitian, Devon Cole. I have a background in mental health outreach. I also work with an incredibly talented fine artist, Janak Narayan, which ties in nicely with what I am also focused on – art and philanthropy,
I have the privilege to be both a sponsor and a member of the underwriting committee for this year’s Art for Advocacy on September 16th, whichraises funds and awareness for Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center. The evening includes a cocktail reception, a silent art auction (featuring 80 works), a seated dinner, and a live art auction. All proceeds benefit DCAC.
I am also a board member and sponsor for Dallas Galleries for Advocacy. We have created the very first Dallas gallery guide, and will be hosting an Art Day on September 23rd from 12PM – 6PM. There will be an after party at Daisha Board Gallery in Tin District. Proceeds also support Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, which improves the lives of abused children.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first thing that comes to mind is servitude. We are all on this life-journey together, and as human beings we must help lighten the burden of others. This is also how I lead, asking how I can help those around me. In my opinion, successful leaders don’t lead from the top-down; they support their staff, team, and colleagues.
I also believe one must be resilient to be successful. Life is not linear; there are ups-and-downs along the way and you have to stay focused. As cheesy as it may sound, you have to dust yourself off and keep going!
Last but certainly not least, you have to find something in life that you are passionate about. If you don’t have passion behind what you are doing, it will not mean anything to you…and it will not impact others. How do you discover what you are passionate about? Take a trip away from your phone, meditate, day dream…look inward!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am feeling overwhelmed, I take a walk…sometimes with my dog. We often forget in this busy, technological world, which also keeps us indoors, that we are actually creatures of nature. Experiencing nature and the outdoors helps us to ground ourselves. A therapist and friend of mine also recommends walking barefoot through the grass. That overwhelming feeling comes from not living in the present moment.
