We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charnelle Towler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charnelle, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from my parents. My parents had my brother and I in their twenties. I would see my dad work two jobs, rotating shifts along with my mom working full- time. Work ethic was instilled in me at early age especially in education
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am fashion stylist and a former fashion blogger in Baltimore + DMV area. I am assisting models with apparel for theme photoshoots, as well as, clients revamping their brand image. The most exciting thing about styling is executing your concept. The photoshoot turned out better than what you imagine.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Networking, consistency, resourceful are qualities and skills that most impactful. Networking- you never know who know whom. There are people who love your work, and are willing to work with you and / or connect you with people on another level. In the industry, consistency is top tier. It is tough in any industry to stay on top of your game, not get caught up in the comparison, nay sayers, and white noise. As my friend stated to me, “ put yourself out there, someone is going to feel it” This is the advice i would share with anyone struggling to begin or coming out of a creative rut.
The best advice is to use your social media platform as tool. Start scouting out photographers you want to work with m, influencers + model’s youre inspired by in your area, send them a dm or email.
Set up a date to do test shoots to build your portfolio or study the influencer content. Most influencer content creators have webinars to assist you in the process. All of this is an investment: time.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have four people lol My two photographers Vernon Davis and Kirby Griffin, fashion stylist Aisya Washington, cousin Shinika Crawley. When i went through my creative break, the following amazing people mentioned above motivated, provided guidance, very resourceful, share opportunities, put things into perspective. All 4 entrepreneurs gave me hope to push forward, continue to be the fashion stylist and blogger I am today.
