Meet Charoné DeShazier

We were lucky to catch up with Charoné DeShazier recently and have shared our conversation below.

Charoné, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I guess you could say that I learned over time, that being myself was all I really needed. As shy and introverted as I claim to be, a complete stranger would never assume it. I’m not quite sure of what it is, or maybe it is the fact that in these moments, when I am the only one in the room that looks like me, I choose to do the thing that a lot of people are afraid of. Just be me, nothing else. Because I have learned that if they can’t appreciate you at face value, then it isn’t worth your time or energy. To constantly pretend to be someone or something that you are not for the sake of the comfort of others is not only exhausting, but

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Enorah Jewelry is a small, woman of color owned business that creates handmade, unique, lightweight hypoallergenic statement piece earrings, jewelry and accessories. My main focus for my business is to scale and become a boutique brand, while still maintaining the handmade & unique aspect.

The most exciting thing about what I do is that the designs and color combinations are always of me. I can put the thoughts that I can’t articulate into words, into my pieces and give my customers a little piece of me with each pair!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence: It’s going to be scary! Keep going! If you love it, don’t let anything or anyone deter you from going for your dreams!

Confidence: No one will believe in you like you will. If you feel it in your heart, don’t let that go! Have faith in yourself and your talent. You can’t get better if you don’t try.

Have fun: Don’t lose passion doing the thing that you love. Don’t lose sight of why you started in the first place. Always remember what got you going because that will keep you going.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is anyone who appreciates handcrafted work. Someone who recognizes the hard work and hours makers and artist put into creating their pieces. Also, most importantly, someone who just wants to try something different & feel good about themselves while doing it.

What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?

There is no one path – to success or even to New York (or Kansas).

Who taught you the most about work?

Society has its myths about where we learn – internships, books, school, etc. However, in

What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?

We wake up, get work, go back home and rinse and repeat – or at
