Meet Charron Walker

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charron Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Charron, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience and strength stem from my relationship with God. I wouldn’t have made it this far without Him. Facing any life-changing event requires digging deep, confronting fears, embracing the unknown, and accepting a new reality. With Him by my side, I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I have also strengthened my resilience through the many journeys I’ve traveled in life. Each one was challenging but invaluable, offering countless lessons, personal growth, maturity, and self-improvement. There’s a saying, “Knowledge is power,” but I believe that applied knowledge is true power. Without applying new information for betterment, it holds no real power.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

October 2000, I found a lump while doing a monthly self-breast exam in the shower. I was 32 years old and just earned a Master’s Degree. I thought I had my whole life ahead of me. I had big plans for myself after graduation. I was going to find a good-paying job in human resources, pay off my student loan, and begin to move into the next stage of my life. I wanted to get married, have children, get a dog, and have a big house with a white picket fence. In a matter of days, everything changed. I remember thinking “I’ve been given a death sentence”. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women aged 15 to 39, with over 1,000 women under 40 dying from it each year. As a 24-year breast cancer conqueror, diagnosed at 32, and having lost my mother to the disease at 33, I had no choice but to fight to live.

I had a lumpectomy, chemo, radiation, and 5 years of hormone therapy. It was stage 1 Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. I had 17 lymph nodes removed, and all were clear, thank God. My oncologist said the cancer would return in 5 years because of my age and family history, but God had another plan for my life. Being a PK and growing up in church, I knew of God. But it wasn’t until my journey with breast cancer that I began to know Him on a personal and intimate level. He is my everything. He is the only constant in my life.

Through my journey I found my purpose and started Young Survivors Network, Inc. We are a support program for young women 40 and under diagnosed with breast cancer. Our mission is to educate, support and advocate for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. We also equip these women in our community with information and a network of caring members, that are willing to give them the best chance available to cope with cancer.

I am excited to announce the release of my new book, “Made Whole Devotional for Breast Cancer Conquerors,” which will soon be available on Amazon. This devotional is designed to provide strength, hope, and spiritual support to those battling breast cancer. Additionally, I host a new podcast, ‘In The Know’ and Breast Health, airing every Tuesday at 8 AM on Elevation Radio Network and Spotify. Tune in for insightful discussions and expert advice on breast health.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities I believe are most important to develop are character, self-love, and respect.

Character encompasses the mental and moral qualities that define who you are and how you engage with the world. It builds trust with others, making them feel safe around you. A strong character helps you make good decisions, inspires others as a role model, and ensures you are honest and respectful in your interactions. Let your character speak louder than your words.

Self-love is about valuing and appreciating yourself. It involves recognizing your worth, taking care of your well-being, and being kind to yourself. When you practice self-love, you are better equipped to handle life’s challenges and maintain a positive outlook. Fall in love with yourself first. Loving yourself teaches others how to love you.

Respect is fundamental in all relationships. It means treating others with kindness, consideration, and understanding. Respect fosters healthy interactions and creates an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Respect is earned, if you want to get it, you’ve got to give it.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I continue to live life to the fullest, cherishing every moment. Every breath is a blessing. Since being diagnosed with breast cancer, I see life through a different lens. I notice the vibrant green of the leaves on trees, the white clouds drifting across a blue sky, and the myriad colors of flowers. Long walks bring me closer to God, as I observe birds soaring overhead, ducks with their ducklings, and the fragrant scents of nature. I find tranquility in the gentle pitter-patter of rain against my windows, the comfort of a good book, and the stillness of silence. I’ve learned to set boundaries for my mental and physical well-being, prioritizing what truly matters and spending my time wisely. There is no greater wealth than peace of mind. If it costs you your peace, it’s too expensive.
