Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chas Evans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chas, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I teach guitar at a small school here in Mississippi. Been teaching there for about 10 years now, back when Covid hit us we basically stopped school, stopped teaching, stopped everything. When I came back the next year, my guitar students had dwindled to almost nothing which was alarming in itself. I went to a conference and met with my guitar teacher colleagues around the state and realized that this was a problem for everyone, not just me.
I had to see about getting the world interested in guitar again. I then realized that was my purpose in life, my reason for being, to teach the world to play guitar. I realized that TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Reels were great places to do this. To offer bit-sized bits of instruction to show people that not all things on guitar and super difficult. It can be easy and fun.
This has exploded since then on all those social platforms leading me to believe that there is still a place out there for guitar to help people.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m here to teach the world to play guitar. I truly believe that it helps people. I was a strange quiet kid, a bit on the hefty side, in high school, then one day I played guitar in the talent show. It was such a confidence boost to me, I’ll never forget that feeling. It helped me open up and blossom and made me feel special. I believe the guitar can help others feel the same way. It’s a friend for life.
I’ve opened a guitar class called “Guitar 101” which I’m very proud of. I believe it to be the best deal in guitar instruction on the internet. For $397, you get lifetime access to 15+ hours of masterclass guitar instruction, Jam tracks that teach you how to practice, and the big one – a weekly group lesson with me. I’m so stoked to offer this to everyone. I’ll provide a link to anyone interested in this amazing deal.
Most guitar courses just give you access to the course and wish you the best of luck. With my course, you get a live guitar teacher with over 35 years of experience to ask questions to. No roadblocks!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
That’s a tough one! There are definitely more than three that have helped me along my journey, but I’ll do into the top three of these that I think made the most impact.
The first one might be a bit of a hot take. My family calls me a maximalist, I do everything to the max. You could say I’m a bit obsessive about some things. The first of these qualities for me would have to be obsession, or maybe a better way of putting it is passion. Passion for not only the guitar but for teaching it. I love to see those light bulb moments with my students. It’s an adrenaline rush for me.
The second would have to be discipline. Discipline in my practicing, even when I’m tired. Discipline in making videos and keeping the socials going. This has helped me in all aspects of my life. Sure I fall off the wagon like everyone else when it comes to this one but the key is to keep coming back. Which leads me to my last quality.
Don’t quit. This is something ingrained in me from my days in the military. Part of the soldier’s creed is “I will never quit”. I try to keep that one present in my life at all times. When I fall, I get back up. That’s not just good advice for soldiers, it’s good advice for anyone trying to achieve something important. Even what looks like a failure, sometimes isn’t. And if it is, just learn from it and keep going.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Being a guitarist and getting into social media, I have had to up my game on video editing. That’s a really big part of creating videos. All of the really big social media gurus typically hire this out to an editor but I’m not quite there yet. I have learned so much this past year about photography and video editing. YouTube has really been a great resource here.
I have also gotten better at tapping into what works and doesn’t work as far as short-form videos go. In short-form videos, you have about 10 – 15 seconds to get your point across so everything has to be perfect and ready to go before you record the video. So in that time, I’ve had to figure out what people are willing to see and do, and what they aren’t. Very interesting to try and get as much information across in 15 seconds as you can.
