Meet Chase Benz

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chase Benz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Chase , thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.

The only way to develop decision-making skills is to put yourself in situations where you actually have to make decisions — again and again. Over time, through that continual process, you begin to see the outcomes of your choices and learn from them. Sitting back and avoiding decisions won’t help you grow.

I believe in starting small, building up to medium-level decisions, and eventually taking on bigger ones. That progression develops both confidence and judgment. Taking risks is also a huge part of it — something that naturally emerges from making decisions.

I heard a quote years ago that stuck with me: “Life will give back what you put into it.” It’s true. I make a conscious effort to take risks, and I write them down — not because I expect instant results, a big project the following week, or even money just because I did something — but so that years from now, I can look back and see where I was and how far I’ve come.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Chase Benz, and I’m a Director, Creative Producer, and Choreographer. I’ve been doing this professionally for over 17 years, and in that time I’ve had the chance to work with some incredible artists — Britney Spears, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, Florida Georgia Line, J Balvin — the list goes on. I’ve created performances for music videos, world tours, Las Vegas residencies, cruise lines, and televised award shows, as well as choreographed for TV series like So You Think You Can Dance, FOX’s Monarch, and NBC’s Quantum Leap.
Some of my favorite career highlights include Britney Spears’ Piece of Me residency, the Backstreet Boys’ Larger Than Life residency, and tours for Rihanna, J Balvin, and Sebastián Yatra. Most recently, I’ve been behind the scenes producing and choreographing high-profile film premieres for Wicked, Gladiator II, Mission Impossible 8, and Mad Max: Furiosa starring Chris Hemsworth.

In addition to creating shows, I’m also a teacher with one of the USA’s top dance conventions, LA Dance Magic. If you aren’t familiar with dance conventions, they bring together top teachers from different styles who travel to cities across the country, holding classes, auditions, and performances on the weekend. I’m honored to be teaching Hip Hop on this convention. Its foundation in teaching younger dancers is exceptional — the training in foundation, style, and performance is truly top tier. There’s no other convention I’d rather be a part of, and the teachers I work alongside push me to be a better educator and human being. I feel like I get to grow every single weekend.

So, I spend about half my time creating shows and the other half teaching dance across the country and the world. At the heart of everything I do is concept creation and bringing ideas to life — from that first spark all the way through to the finished live or visual experience. My passion is crafting shows and moments that audiences don’t just watch, but feel and remember long after the curtain closes.

What makes this all special is that I get to take my professional work, teach and share my knowledge with the my students at LA Dance Magic. Right now, I really am living the dream.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The most important qualities I value are the ability to keep learning, being fully present in the moment, and understanding how everyone on your team does their job. Staying curious and open allows you to grow, being present helps you connect and adapt in real time, and knowing how each person contributes makes you a stronger team player — especially when challenges arise and you need to keep the play moving.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes! I’m always looking for people or companies to collaborate with — especially anyone putting together events, live tours, or shows. That’s truly where my heart and soul are. If you’re reading this and are interested, I’d love to connect and explore ideas. Right now, I’m in the development process for a few exciting shows for cruise lines and the Las Vegas Strip.
