Meet Chaz Hodges

We recently connected with Chaz Hodges and have shared our conversation below.

Chaz , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I naturally lean towards optimism, steering clear of excessive complaints. My tendency is to find silver linings in various situations. Remaining present has been my grounding force. A quote that resonates deeply with me is, “You are not in traffic. You are traffic.” It serves as a reminder that a simple shift in perspective can lead to better reactions in any circumstance.

A core belief of mine is that “we don’t get what we want, we get what we are.” With this in mind, I approach all situations with optimism, appreciating each moment. I embrace the intricacies of life and confidently move forward with my head held high.

I’m also surrounded by divine beings whose energy I reflect.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Chicago upbringing, Master’s of Fine Arts in Acting, and the Creator & Executive Producer of the documentary “GOD IS A BLACK WOMAN.” My roots from southern Mississippi taught me that “there is more than one way to skin a cat(fish).” I extend this perspective to navigating the systemic oppression faced by BIPOC individuals within the United States. My goal is to offer emancipatory thoughts, not to fight or be right, but to challenge societal norms and self-limiting beliefs. We are now in an era with the most creative landscape ever seen, where we can learn from diverse sources beyond traditional influences like school, parents, small towns, and church. I greatly admire those who are building cultural hubs for community, whether in online platforms, blogs, wellness centers, social media, galleries, or non-profit organizations. As a humanist, I believe this is an extraordinary time to exist, and I aim to awaken others to this reality.

“GOD IS A BLACK WOMAN” is my debut documentary, providing a space for stream of consciousness communication. It is authentic and crafted with love, having been showcased at various esteemed venues, including The Black Image Center in Culver City, Professor Scott Barton’s African Spirituality course at Notre Dame, Professor Reggie Rice’s Evolution of Communication course at National Louis University, The Silver Room Black Party Film Festival in Chicago, and The Soho Warehouse in DTLA.

While I appreciate the journey that has shaped me, I’m now leaning more into my present and future. I see myself as a soul fortunate to connect with the divinity in others. My mission is to impact peoples psyches with the understanding that empathy is a superpower that fosters stronger, more compassionate & complete individuals.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Skills that have guided my journey involve taking leaps of faith and trusting that the net will appear. This was evident in my Indiegogo campaign for this project, where I secured thousands of dollars in just 3 days. Another strength of mine is the willingness to ask for help without fear. Recognizing that there’s a network of people with valuable knowledge or experiences similar to your goals is essential. Release the spirit of competition and reach out for assistance, whether in writing proposals, crafting pitches, or planning events.

Lastly, I emphasize the importance of being of service. The law of reciprocity is ever at play. Give generously, and observe how it comes back to you. Receive graciously when it arrives. We exist in a state of constant transition, never lacking anything. This perpetual flow is the beauty of the universe.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am seeking collaboration with Black Women, and all women, worldwide who resonate with this message. Bringing a voice to the voiceless has been a profoundly gratifying experience. Honoring the vessel that encapsulates my soul holds immense significance for me, and I am eager to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share this sentiment. If you have connections at platforms such as BET, Essence, Hoorae, Array Films, Galleries, and more. Excited to establish aligned communication.

The overarching goal is always to share, to unabashedly express what the Creator has placed on my heart. I am shooting all professional shots and welcome collaborations that align. This is the beauty of our shared existence. Let’s connect and create together. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or send a personal message on IG, @GIABW_Doc.
