We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chelsea Babin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chelsea below.
Chelsea, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
People often equate photography with pure creativity. But what happens when that creative spark flickers and fades during a shoot? It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of sessions – families, couples, weddings, branding, events – and suddenly find your creative well running dry. This is where burnout creeps in.
I’ve been there, and it’s a frustrating place to be, especially when you genuinely love what you do. Photography has been my creative outlet for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t until recent years that I turned it into a profession. It’s so easy to get swept away in the hustle of running a photography business that you can find yourself simply going through the motions.
So, how do I keep my creativity alive? I actively seek out styled shoots or dream up fun, personal projects with friends and family. I also love working with clients who are open to more “out-of-the-box” concepts, granting me greater creative freedom. These opportunities allow me to shoot without the pressure of rigid expectations, free from the worry of getting it “wrong” or disappointing a client.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
The past three years of growing my photography business have been both a rollercoaster and a whirlwind. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported me along the way. My primary focus is on weddings, followed by portrait sessions. I absolutely love what I do, and the fact that I get to turn one of my passions into a career. I’ve always been a storyteller, whether through writing or photographs, and that’s perhaps one of my favorite aspects of my work.
I’m looking forward to continuing the growth of my business, but also my personal photography. I’m constantly seeking new knowledge and striving to hone my craft even further. Right now, my goal is to continue booking clients and to become the best photographer I can be.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice to those embarking on their photography journey is to embrace learning, welcome constructive criticism, and persevere through challenges. These three principles will significantly contribute to your growth and ultimately help you become a better photographer.
Discover your passion. Whether it lies in weddings, maternity, real estate, or any other genre of photography, find the niche that brings you the most joy. This focused passion will fuel your growth in that specific area.
Working closely with my mentors and being receptive to their feedback was instrumental in my development as a photographer, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance.
And remember, if you don’t succeed at first, keep trying!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking to collaborate with people! I feel that working with others is one of the best ways to learn and also keep creativity flowing! My DMs are always open for collab offers!
