Meet Chelsea Cushing

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chelsea Cushing. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Chelsea, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Finding my purpose has been a deeply personal journey, shaped by my experiences over the last two decades in the modeling industry. Throughout my career as a talent, I often found myself reflecting on the challenges I faced and the lessons learned along the way. I realized that what I truly craved was mentorship—someone to guide me through the complexities of the business, to help me understand not just the “how,” but the “why” behind our craft. If I had had that guidance earlier on, I believe I would have charted a clearer path to my success and navigated my goals with greater confidence and clarity.

This realization has become the cornerstone of my mission today. I understand the unique challenges aspiring talent face because I’ve been there myself. It’s not simply about landing a gig or being in the right place at the right time. Success in this industry requires a combination of discipline, perseverance, and an insatiable burning desire to pursue one’s dreams.

In my work, I emphasize the importance of a positive mindset as essential to this journey. A supportive mental framework helps not only to overcome obstacles but also to inspire others. When aspiring models can see how passion, hard work, and a healthy belief in themselves can lead to tangible results, it ignites their own drive. I strive to create an environment where they can feel empowered and equipped with the tools they need to succeed.

Ultimately, my purpose lies in being the mentor I longed for—providing guidance, sharing insights, and fostering resilience. By helping others understand the nuances of the business and encouraging a disciplined approach to their craft, I hope to pave the way for them to achieve their own goals, transforming the landscape of talent in the modeling industry one aspiring individual at a time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey in the modeling industry, I can identify three key qualities and areas of knowledge that have had a significant impact on both my personal growth and the guidance I provide to the talent I work with now.

First and foremost, my experience as a talent herself has been invaluable. Having spent years in front of the camera and navigating the intricacies of the industry, I understand firsthand the challenges and triumphs that aspiring models face. This background equips me with a unique perspective, allowing me to offer practical, informed guidance that is grounded in reality. I know what it takes to succeed because I’ve lived it, and this direct experience informs the strategies and advice I provide to our talent.

Secondly, the relationships I’ve fostered within the industry play a crucial role in our approach at AFTM. These connections not only enhance our visibility but also provide us with real-time feedback and input from industry insiders. This knowledge can be transformative for our talent, empowering them to leverage the tools and resources that truly elevate their careers. By understanding current market trends, client expectations, and what leading agencies seek, we can tailor our coaching and support to suit the demands of the dynamic modeling landscape.

Finally, cultivating a growth mindset has been integral to my journey. Emphasizing continuous learning and adaptation has shaped my approach to both my career and the development of our talent. I encourage the models we work with to embrace this mindset, as it fosters resilience and adaptability—qualities that are essential for long-term success in this fast-paced industry. By instilling this philosophy, we not only prepare them for immediate opportunities but also ensure they are equipped for sustained growth throughout their careers.

My experience as a talent, the relationships I’ve built within the industry, and the emphasis on a growth mindset form the foundation of my impact as a model agent and coach. These elements empower me to guide and inspire the aspiring models in our care, helping them navigate their journeys with confidence and purpose.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instilling a strong foundation of values that have shaped who I am both personally and professionally. They taught me the importance of a strong work ethic, resilience, compassion, and unwavering drive. Growing up as a dancer and model during a time when pursuing a career in the arts wasn’t fully supported by society, I often faced doubts and challenges. However, my parents stood steadfast in their belief in me, providing the encouragement I needed to chase my dreams.

Even during the times I felt like giving up—times that, frankly, occurred more often than I’d like to admit—they were there with tough love, reminding me of how hard I had worked to get to that point. Their mantra, “No, you’ve worked too hard to give up now,” became a lifeline, pushing me to persevere when my own resolve wavered.

To this day, my parents are among the first people I call whenever I encounter challenges or celebrate wins in my career. They continue to be my rock, offering guidance and support that reminds me of the ethos they instilled in me. Their example has shaped my aspirations and the kind of person I strive to be, both in my career and in life. The lessons they imparted—faith in my abilities, ethical integrity, and the importance of compassion—remain integral to my journey as a talent agent and coach. Their support has not only fueled my passion for the arts but also reinforced my commitment to helping others realize their own dreams in the industry.
