Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chelsea Fabbro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chelsea, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I give that credit to my Mom. I am one of four kids and from a very young age our Mom would always include us in whatever volunteer events she was participating in. One of the more consistent non-profits we would volunteer with was UMOM New Day Center. I remember they were helping single moms have a safe place to stay with their kiddos while they get back on their feet. Our volunteering consisted of reading to the kids on campus or having what I would consider a “field day” outside with all kinds of activities set up at stations. Our mission was to help those families have a good day that wasn’t about the scary stuff going on in their lives but was about laughter and old-fashioned fun. Those experiences are when I first realized the joy of being a generous person and knew that I wanted that feeling to last forever. There is no better feeling than knowing I was able to help someone smile or feel seen when they needed it most. Being generous is one way to be kind and we can never have enough kindness. I will be forever grateful to my Mom for showing me the power of it all at a young age because as an adult today that core value is woven throughout everything, I do in my life both personally and professionally.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own an insurance agency where we specialize in making an insurance purchase an understandable and empowering experience for our clients. We provide an agency community where new and current clients can trust that their individual insurance needs are being provided with integrity and their concerns thoughtfully handled. We focus primarily on the home, auto, umbrella and life insurance needs of our clients.
What I get most excited about is my belief that my agency has the power to make a positive impact in my small pocket of the world, and even beyond. I am motivated by three significant passions, which are, to create a space for fellow women to start and build careers within my agency, using my agency to spread kindness throughout our community, and protecting our clients with the proper coverage and insurance education they need to advocate for themselves when it matters most.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My optimism, discipline and persistence are the qualities that have served me well and still do on this journey. Inevitably, bad days come along but I tend to lean into anticipating that something awesome is about to happen. So on those hard days that optimistic mindset, that something good is just around the corner, gives me the hope I need to carry on. As a business owner you get a ton of great ideas but the best ones are the ones you actually do and stick to. Over the years, I have wasted a lot of time thinking about the good ideas, starting a half dozen of my favorite ideas rather than just doing one very well. You have to have the discipline to build behaviors that are leading to your success.
My piece of advice for those starting out is to seek out rejection. It is so beneficial to be wrong more than you are right when you are just starting out because it is how you get to the good stuff. It is so important to realize that trying and failing to your next best idea is a part of the journey and to not let it be why you feel like crap about yourself or question if you should even try anymore. You can do more than you know with the strength that comes after you push through the momentary feelings of failure, shame and embarrassment after messing up. It is your fuel. That is your hard-earned foundation, that is where you build the stamina to choose you and believe in YOU!
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I have to give this one to two different books. First, Girl, Wash your Face by Rachel Hollis. This book set off a thirst and curiosity to understand myself more. She speaks to common lies we say to ourselves as women and walks you through thought provoking questions to challenge those thoughts on your own terms. I thought I was self aware before going into this read but this book revealed to me that I had stones unturned and was ready to see under them. Understanding your “why” is famously important and a key to success but this book showed me understanding your “why not” can be equally as powerful.
Mindset by Carol Dweck. Carol shows the power of understanding that you are capable of so much with the brain and mind you have. It is not a finite resource of intelligence but instead you can build on the intelligence you have through mistakes and failure. Failure is not the confirmation of not being smart enough or good enough, instead quite the opposite. It’s the data, the lesson you need to get further along the next time you go at it. Very powerful for me and changed my perspective on all of life’s hard knocks.
