We were lucky to catch up with Chelsea Rose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
For self care I like to roll out my mat and do some yoga, mat pilates, or a guided meditation. I also love to be in nature. I’ll go for a walk and try to slow down and tune into the plants and trees around me. Sometimes I’ll journal. All of these things keep me grounded and help me operate from a more soul-centered, intuitive place.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I sing and write songs, play guitar, and have a live band that I perform with. I’ve been writing and playing in bands since I was 13 and it’s something that feels very natural for me. I had a band with my sister, called “Summer Twins” and we got to tour places like Brazil and Japan. It’s was amazing.
We retired that band, and in 2022 I released my solo album called “Truth or Consequences,” which has a little touch of ’60s pop, rock ‘n roll, disco, and even a little bossa nova. I’ve currently been inspired by heavier rock, ’90s grunge, and the punk I listened to as a teenager, so you can expect to hear those influences on my next release.
I love recording and playing shows, but I’m also in love with the visual aspect of music – producing and directing music videos, photoshoots, and album art. Aside from being a musician, I’m also a photographer and art director. I love to shoot fashion and portraits, and collaborate with other artists on their vision.
Honestly, I wish I spent more time doing all of these things! It feels like there’s just never enough time when I’m always balancing many things at once. I also have a day job which I’m passionate about. My family owns and runs a small chain of recycled and vintage clothing stores in southern California, called DeeLux.
I feel very grateful that I get to use my creativity in so many different ways. I can’t imagine another way of living.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance – To be an artist and go deep with it, you have to persevere. There are many challenges. Whether it be self doubt, financial limitations, mental, emotional, or physical health, the algorithm, distraction, fear – you have to just keep showing up. However, I’ve learned to take breaks and rest when I need to, and to not feel bad about it. That part is really important. But when I’m ready, I ease my way back into it.
Courage – It’s scary to put yourself out there! It’s scary to be vulnerable, and to share some of the deepest parts of who you are, knowing that some people will reject it. It’s scary to take action, make moves, reach out to people, ask for help, and to shoot your shot. If it’s scary, then it’s likely going to be really great work, if you follow through with it.
Imagination – This one is soo important. Not only is it key for the actual creative process, but for breaking past boundaries and limitations. It can be easy to box yourself into a style that you’re comfortable with, but it’s important to break out and try new things. Also, when you have financial limitations it can feel, well, limiting – but if you use your imagination you can find other ways to get things done. I just shot a music video on a phone. My sister records music on her phone. I just went to a show at a laundromat. Use your imagination and see beyond what’s in front of you.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of improvement has been my health. I reached a pretty low point in my emotional health, and partly my physical health in the last 2 years or so. I was very burned out and depressed, and thought I would quit playing music for a while. I’m really proud of myself for reaching out to get the help that I needed. I did a lot of deep diving in therapy and had to drastically change my diet and lifestyle for a while. I’m feeling a lot better, and self-care is an ongoing practice.
