Meet Cheri Regis

We were lucky to catch up with Cheri Regis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Cheri, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from my family, especially my mom. When it comes to getting things done, we jump first and ask questions later. Likewise, the same goes for me when it comes to my work life and my creative life. Knowing my mom, not only is she hardworking but she is also determined and resilient.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary artist, designer, writer and founder of my namesake online art and craft studio Cheri Regis Works. CRW, started in 2021, specializes in creating modern and contemporary art, craft and design for clients who love and enjoy the thrill of dynamic, in your face works of art. I believe what makes my art practice exciting and special is that it has always been collaborative from the very beginning: my mom exposed me to visual art at 10 years old when she used to take me with her to all her classes during her undergrad in college. While she isn’t an artist, she is still creative as she mostly loves to express herself with a passion for fashion! I focus on painting, drawing, fiber art and artisan crafting, with an emphasis in dollmaking (which I am a second generation doll designer and maker). I am currently making new dolls and stuffed toys for my upcoming group senior thesis exhibition next month at Park University’s Campanella Gallery (more details forthcoming).

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, especially as I continue with my academic journey at Park, the three qualities, skills and areas of knowledge that made the difference would be attention to detail, empathy and communication. Before I started attending classes, I didn’t have any of these traits as I was too hyper focused on myself and the world around me. At the time I didn’t consider everyone around me and their needs, but now no one is off the table. If someone needs me for anything I hear them out and help them out. My advice for everyone looking to master attention to detail, empathy and communication: start with yourself first, then take in your environment and surroundings before taking action. In this day and age, it’s easy to move rapidly and swiftly without taking everything and everyone into consideration.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m currently on the lookout for and following fiber artists and artisans involved in the costume, fashion, apparel, textile, craft and product design fields as they are where I’m headed towards and am currently studying. Of course, I would love to partner with local and regional small and mid sized brands and businesses that are in these industries! For inquiries, they can contact me directly through email (regischeri@gmail.com)!
