We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cherish Black a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherish , appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
Thanks for asking! Honestly my self discipline comes from within. It’s a mindset thing if you believe you can do it then you can. I train my mind each day by reading audios and surrounding myself with people that work hard to motivate me. Just like you work out your body it’s just as impressive to work out your mind because that’s where it starts!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I also knew I was destined for greatness with hair. I grew up doing my own hair, friends and family so I always knew I was gifted. In high school I decided I wanted to take hair serious and become a professional hairstylist. I decided to join cosmetology school to pursue my dreams and dedicated myself to graduate with my certificate while pregnant the whole 12 months. I worked very hard and with my hard work and dedication I graduated cosmetology school and had my son the same day! Im so bless to be loving my dream and being the woman I knew I was destined to be. As a hairstylist I offer all types of faux locs as a service. I became passionate with faux locs in cosmetology school and now It’s the only service I offer. I searched long and hard for a hairstylist I can confidently offer my clients a type of hair style that would being the clients back for more and that is faux locs. The most exciting part about my job is being able to see my clients walk out the door feeling like a new person that’s the special part to me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities that comes with being a hairstylist are good communication skills, professionalism, and listening skills they all play apart with being the best hairstylist. You want to be able to communicate with your clients when the sit in your chair, you want to be professional at all times remember it’s a luxury service so you want to provide just that, nothing less! And lastly good listening skills with this business comes with also being a listening ears as the clients become closer to the hairstylist they will open up more and more so being able to hear them out is very important. I developed these qualities through practice and still work on them to be the best hairstyles I can be to my clients. The best advice I can give is to practice and study each and everyday to develop your skills and knowledge.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has been patience! With myself and with my business I work hard to be the best but have realized over these past months it takes time nothing happens overnight. I’ve learned the importance of letting things just flow and not trying to force anything or anybody. Everything will and has played out the way it was suppose to so trusting god and believing in the process has helped me these past 12 months.
