We recently connected with Cherlyn Carby and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherlyn , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism comes from my mother. She is a woman of faith. The kind who doesn’t just speak about trusting God but lives it every day. Growing up, I watched her walk with a steady confidence that came from knowing Yahweh was always in control. She didn’t panic when things changed. She prayed. She listened. She led with peace and purpose.
We had what we needed, and she made sure our home was filled with love, structure, and spiritual grounding. But more than anything, she gave us an example of how to believe even when things weren’t perfect. She had a way of seeing beyond the moment and trusting that what she couldn’t see was still working in her favor.
That kind of faith shaped me. It taught me to respond to life with hope, not fear. When I face challenges in business or in life, I hear her voice reminding me to pause, to pray, and to keep going. She taught me that faith is active. It plans, prepares, and presses forward with confidence.
That’s where my optimism comes from. From a woman who trusts God deeply and showed me how to live with that same unshakable belief.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the founder of Lushus Hair, a Caribbean-inspired natural hair care brand created to care for the entire family. What began as a personal mission to find gentle, effective solutions for my postpartum hair loss and my daughter’s sensitive scalp has grown into something much bigger. Lushus Hair is rooted in heritage, healing, and the power of clean, plant-based ingredients.
What makes this journey special is the community that’s growing alongside the brand. We’re building more than a product line. We’re creating a movement that celebrates culture, family, and natural beauty in all its forms. Seeing people connect with our story and share how our products are helping their families is what keeps me going.
I’m especially excited about where we’re headed. Our retail presence is expanding, we have new launches on the horizon, and we’ve built a powerful partnership with Avery Helpful Hair Kits. Through that collaboration, we’re able to give back by donating hair care essentials to children in foster care. That kind of impact, meeting real needs while building a brand with purpose, is what I’m most proud of.
This is more than business for me. It is ministry. It is legacy. And it is only the beginning.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I think back on this journey, I can see it wasn’t just the big wins that shaped me, but the quiet lessons in between. In the early days, all I had was an idea, a small budget, and a heart full of hope. There were moments when I felt like I was standing in the middle of an empty room, shouting my dream into the void. That’s when I learned my first and most important companion on this road: resilience. It came in the form of getting up after hearing “no” again, dusting myself off after a failed launch, and finding the courage to try one more time. I didn’t realize it then, but each stumble was teaching me how to stand taller.
The second gift came disguised as frustration: adaptability. I had a picture in my head of how things were “supposed” to go, but life, business, and people rarely followed that script. A supplier fell through, so I learned to find new ones. A marketing plan didn’t take off, so I experimented with something different. Some of my biggest breakthroughs came when I finally let go of the picture in my head and embraced the possibilities right in front of me.
And then there was relationship-building, the skill that’s opened more doors than I ever could have on my own. I learned that connections aren’t about collecting business cards, but about listening, remembering, and caring about people beyond what they can give you. The trust I built over coffee chats, DMs, and chance encounters has led to opportunities no pitch deck could have guaranteed.
If you’re just starting, my advice is this: resilience is like a muscle, build it by finishing what you start, even in small things. Adaptability grows when you stay curious; keep learning things that stretch you. And relationships are strengthened when you start by giving. Celebrate others’ wins, check in without an agenda, and be genuinely interested in their story. One day, you’ll look back like I am now and realize that every detour, every delay, and every “almost” was just preparing you for where you were meant to be all along.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Right now, my biggest challenge is balancing the demands of my full-time job with the needs of building and growing Lushus Hair. Both require a high level of focus, energy, and decision-making, and there are days when I feel like I’m sprinting in two races at once. The vision I have for Lushus Hair is big, but time is the one resource I can’t get back, and managing it well is an ongoing battle.
To overcome this, I’ve become extremely intentional about how I use my hours. I map out my weeks in detail, blocking specific times for product development, marketing, and relationship-building so the business keeps moving forward no matter what. I also prioritize tasks that directly impact revenue or long-term growth, and I lean on my team to take on more responsibilities where possible. Every spare moment—early mornings, lunch breaks, evenings—is an opportunity to push the brand forward.
It’s not easy, but I remind myself that this season of juggling is temporary. Every step I take now, even if it’s small, is a seed planted for the future I’m building. The discipline, resilience, and focus I’m developing in this season will only make me stronger when I can eventually dedicate myself to Lushus Hair full-time.
