We recently connected with CHERYL GORDON and have shared our conversation below.
CHERYL, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through my pain. For over 20 years, I lived in the shadows of an abusive marriage — silenced, controlled, and broken. But it was in the darkest moments, when I escaped near death more than once, that I realized I was still standing for a reason.
My healing journey began when I found the courage to speak up, and each time I shared a part of my story, I saw it light a spark in someone else. That’s when I knew — my purpose wasn’t just to survive, but to help others find their own strength, their own voice, and their own freedom.
Purpose found me when I answered the call to break the silence — not just for myself, but for every woman still suffering in silence. And that’s how SKIRTSTRONG was born — not as a brand, but as a banner of strength, faith, and resilience.
.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
**Spreading the word about me and my brand**
I am the founder of **SKIRTSTRONG INC.,** a nonprofit organization based in North Lauderdale, Florida, created to bring awareness to domestic violence and to empower survivors to find their voice, healing, and strength. SKIRTSTRONG is more than just a name — it’s a movement that reminds women that they can reclaim their identity, their worth, and their voice, no matter what they’ve endured.
What makes this work so special to me is that it comes from the most personal place — my own survival. After more than two decades in an abusive marriage, and two near-death experiences, I emerged not just with wounds, but with wisdom. God gave me a mandate to turn my pain into purpose. And He gave me the name *SKIRTSTRONG* — reminding me that the skirt, once used as a tool of oppression by my abuser, would now become a symbol of resilience and grace.
Today, SKIRTSTRONG hosts awareness events, provides resources to survivors, and shares messages of healing and restoration through speaking engagements and community partnerships. Our slogan, **“Women in Skirts, standing strong,”** is more than a phrase — it’s our truth.
We are currently preparing for our **2nd annual event**, *“Breaking the Silence – Bringing Awareness to Domestic Violence,”* on **October 4, 2025**, in partnership with the **City of North Lauderdale**. This event will feature survivors, advocates, community leaders, and powerful voices — including men who are also courageously stepping forward to speak out against abuse.
SKIRTSTRONG is a ministry, a mission, and a message. And I am humbled every day to be trusted to carry it.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”
— Proverbs 31:25
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
**Three Most Important Qualities, Skills and/or Areas of Knowledge**
Looking back, the three most impactful things in my journey were:
1. **Faith**
My unwavering belief in God was the foundation of everything. Faith gave me the strength to walk through the fire and still believe there was purpose on the other side. For anyone starting their journey, I encourage you to hold onto your faith — even when your voice shakes, even when the road feels dark. Trust that your story is not over, and that God has already written victory into your future.
2. **Resilience**
Surviving is one thing — but continuing to rise, speak, build, and serve after trauma takes deep resilience. It’s something I developed one moment at a time. My advice: give yourself grace. Healing doesn’t happen overnight. But with every small act of courage, you are rebuilding your strength.
3. **Purpose-Driven Communication**
Learning how to share my story with truth, clarity, and compassion changed everything. It allowed me to transform pain into power — and connect with others in meaningful ways. If you’re early in your journey, find your voice. Write it down. Speak it out loud. And know that when you speak from the heart, someone else finds hope.
My path wasn’t easy — but every tear, every trial, and every triumph brought me here. And if I can walk through it and rise, so can you.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes — absolutely. SKIRTSTRONG INC. is rooted in collaboration, and I believe that we are stronger when we come together.
I am looking to partner with:
Survivors** who are ready to share their stories and uplift others
Mental health professionals**, counselors, and life coaches who can offer support and resources to those in healing
Churches, nonprofits, and community organizations** committed to breaking cycles of abuse and supporting women and families
Artists, speakers, and creatives** who want to use their voice and platform to bring awareness
Businesses and brands** interested in sponsoring or supporting our events, giveaways, or outreach efforts
Men** who are allies, mentors, and advocates — because breaking the silence requires all of us
If you feel called to connect, collaborate, or contribute — we would be honored to hear from you.
