We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chet Beverly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chet , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I built my confidence and self-esteem from a young age through sports like football and track, along with my father’s encouragement that I could be anything I wanted to be.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Chet Beverly, known as “Poster.” I am a storyteller and hip-hop artist with a lyrical East Coast style over modern beats. From a young age, I knew I had a voice that could captivate an audience. My journey as an artist began when I discovered my ability to freestyle at a high level, giving me a new competitive outlet after leaving sports. Hip-hop became my arena for self-expression, and freestyling felt like unlocking a hidden superpower. I use my voice in my music to tell stories that resonate, connect, and inspire.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My most impactful qualities, skills, and knowledge come from having the courage to speak confidently without nervousness, being assertive, taking on leadership roles, and always staying truthful. I’ve had the audacity to pursue exactly what I want without fear.
For anyone just starting their journey, it’s essential to develop tough skin, embrace criticism, and be open to making a few mistakes along the way because growth comes from learning and perseverance.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My dad was my biggest support system. Losing him in April 2024 was devastating, leaving me feeling lost. One of my biggest obstacles and challenges now is continuing to show up as a performing artist while maintaining the right frame of mind.
