Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chetachi Egwu Ph.d.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Chetachi, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I grew up often being the only person of African parentage in many spaces, and sometimes the only person of African descent in general. As such, being the “only” has never bothered me; and I’ve learned that if it bothers other people, it is simply not my problem. For me, it is important to take the opportunities of being the only one like me in a space by learning from others that are not like me. I believe that true learning occurs when you exit your comfort zone, and what you know, and enter the realm of the “unknown”. For example, I have attended several conferences that were intended for general managers of television stations, all of who were White men. Taking the opportunity to be in that room gave me knowledge that I’ve been able to implement in what I currently do. Sometimes, being the only one in the room room gives you the chance to take everything in without distractions or interruptions.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder of a new online contact network called IndieSoup Media. Our goal is to give exposure to independent content, creators, a chance they may not necessarily get with traditional linear media networks. We have content that falls into four general areas: lifestyle, arts and entertainment, business, tech and education and global content and current issues. These are purposely broad to allow us to accept many different types of content.
We are distinctive in that we are a social first network, with YouTube being our biggest platform. When people watch our shows, they can also engage with each other and show creators in the comments. Viewers can find a myriad of shows from three minutes segments to one hour shows. We have a mix of live streamed and pre-recorded shows that are broadcast live.
To celebrate milestones, such as an increased in YouTube subscribers, we have celebratory live DJ sets, so look for one when we hit 20,000 to 25,000 subscribers on YouTube!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my love for all types of media has been key in pursuing a venture of this type. When you I’m not passionate about what you’re doing. It becomes just another job. Having a doctorate in communication doesn’t necessarily always translate to success in media, but for me, the knowledge base and persistence it gave me has been very helpful. Also, having a dedicated community that I have built through my show MediaScope. I would suggest that people build work on building a community around their ventures. After all, people engage and patronize those who they know, like, and trust! Get professional development to assist with your venture. Mentorship is also key. The best leaders have good mentors.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
