Meet Chey Myers

We recently connected with Chey Myers and have shared our conversation below.

Chey, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Well its hard that’s for sure! But simple! To keep my creativity alive I change things up! Instead of doing the same thing over and over it helps to try different types of mediums and styles! Some examples in my case would be that I’ve done makeup products, soap, jewelry, resin art, tie-dye, hydro dipping, pour painting, regular painting and digital art (graphic design)! Which at the moment happens to be my favorite! In one year I was able to teach myself how to use procreate on my iPad and I am able to create my own style of graphic/digital artwork!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Well to start off, my name is CheyAnne Myers. But my family and friends call me Chey! I am 28 years old and I wear many hats. I create makeup products, I do makeup looks, jewelry, resin art, soap, painting, paint pouring, hydro dipping, drawing and most recently graphic design (digital art)! In the past year an a half I have taught myself how to use Procreate! Its a drawing app you can get for iPads! Right now I focus mainly on doing portraits of people in my own kind of style and sometimes l do landscapes too! When someone is interested in a portrait, I ask for a couple things like:

– an HD photo ( preferably a front facing, no filter photo)
– what type of background they’d want {simple or detailed)( I can do pretty much anything like: underwater scene, space, mountains, beaches, butterflies, flowers, etc)
– if they want any added accessories (like a purse, nails, their business products, etc.)
– favorite colors (so I can use their favorite colors more then other colors)
– any text? (Like business name, quote, their name, last name, date)

Once I have all the info I need, Ill get started! I always start with drawing the outline, then if they asked for added accessories ill get those drawn in too! Once the outline is complete ill start the “coloring in” process, which is my absolute favorite part! That part brings the whole drawing together! After the coloring is all done and looking perfect, l will start on the background! Depending on what type of background they chose, (simple or detailed) I start with their favorite colors! Get those blended out, and start adding all the little details! When I feel like the background and portrait are complete, I’ll add in the text they requested and show them for approval! I am always open to criticism, so if there is something they don’t like about it I will go in and change what needs to be changed! I think the most exciting/special part about graphic design for me would be the reaction I get from people when they see their portrait! It makes my heart so happy!
I am always taking commissions on portraits, so please feel free to contact me on Facebook or at my business email!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey so far would have to be patience, practice and originality! First, Patience, because things don’t just happen overnight. I had to learn to slow down and take it one step at a time instead of trying to accomplish everything in a day! Second, Practice, and I know this sounds like a cliché but practice makes perfect! It took me a year just to learn how to use procreate and I still don’t know everything! But practicing everyday has helped me become more confident! Last, originality, because no one likes when they see the same thing from different people over and over! Change things up and be original! Show people the real you! Show them what you are capable of!
My advice to improve those would be to surround yourself with people that love, care and support you to the fullest extent! That’s what has helped me get to where I am today! Their love and support has made me feel like I can accomplish anything!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I think that would be amazing! I would love to collaborate on a piece of artwork with someone who has a different style (or similar) then me! But I think it would be super cool to see different styles come together into one collective piece! If anyone is interested in a collaboration then you can contact me at my business email or my social media!
