We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cheyenne Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cheyenne, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Even though I developed a liking for baking in high-school and continued through college, I had no clue what I wanted to bring to society after I graduated. I just knew that I loved to make beautiful looking cakes.
There was a Period in time where banana pudding was The Star of the show. It was all over social media. People were waiting in long lines for it. Every time I was out I would hear people talk about it. It was everywhere I looked and people were eating HUGE containers of it.
I never had banana pudding and honestly, it looked disgusting.
It looked like lunch food slop in a container with bananas to decorate the container. It was very unappealing.
I got so tired of seeing it and the calorie intake in it was horrendous, so I wanted to make a healthier version of banana pudding that looked better, taste fantastic and the guilt was never to be found. That is how I figured out what my purpose was gonna be! The very thing that’s gonna set me apart from everybody else, and the good I could bring to the generations and society by just altering how I make desserts.
Making low calorie, low sugar and low to no salt desserts is my purpose
Bringing elegant, luxury, affordable and no guilt desserts to tables around Michigan and Chicago
Healthier desserts don’t have to be nasty and it shouldn’t cost an arm and leg
Everyone should get the opportunity to eat better. And that is why we are here!
Never run from a dessert

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Confidence is a Major key. And that’s coming from a shy woman, when I went to an event as a food vendor I was very nervous and shy and I wasn’t confident in the food I had even though I knew it was good, I was too humble and me being that way, put off a energy to everybody in the room that I wasn’t confident. And nobody came over to me. Once I got up and got over myself and presented my confidence, people started buying my food, i began to sell out! So I was able to see that in 4k HD, that me being shy and not confident was hindering my skills from shining.
Communication is second. Knowing how to explain your purpose and what you are selling is very important. Diversifying your choices of words will gain you more traction
Staying positive!! I’ve learned that from a friend that also owns a business. When you’re not in a positive mood, it shows on your face and it shows through your aura and In your energy, and that makes people not wanna come to you, because now they’re feeling uncomfortable, because you’re not giving off a welcoming feeling.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The owner of Boundless Grind (another small business), DeAndre Neal has been a great help for me! He has been running his business successfully for years while this was my first rodeo. He has given me so much good advice and solutions to just about all my problems cause often I will find myself in a mist of questions with no answers.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the problem when you’re in the middle of it. It’s easier for someone on the outside looking in to easily spot what you are missing and what you are not doing, and what you could focus your craft on to become better or to attract more.
I honestly feel like as a business owner, you should surround yourself with more small business owners so that y’all can sit and bounce ideas off of each other and also hold eachother accountable for goals and making sure you’re staying on a path and any questions that you have are getting answered correctly that and is pointing you in the right direction.
Being an entrepreneur is not easy, it really calls for a lot of guidance and we shouldn’t be hard on ourselves for not having certain tools to dig us out of problems
