Meet Chikeitha Owens LPC CBC

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chikeitha Owens LPC CBC a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Chikeitha, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
From an early age, even before my college years, I found myself drawn to social work and became a natural referral source for family and friends seeking assistance. The joy I derived from helping others became a defining aspect of my character.

During my journey through various roles, including positions at Dallas Metrocare Behavioral Health Services and the Texas Health and Human Services, I witnessed the challenges individuals faced in mental health and the protective services system. These experiences fueled my passion for making a positive impact on people’s lives.

A significant turning point occurred when I joined Nexus Recovery Center, focusing on individuals combating substance abuse addiction, and mental health issues. This experience further honed my skills and deepened my understanding of the intersection between mental health and addiction.

Even before pursuing higher education, my commitment to service manifested in the establishment of a non-profit organization at the age of 28—Millennium Teens with Dreams. The primary goal was to address teen pregnancy prevention and promote abstinence. This early foray into community service laid the foundation for my later career, emphasizing the proactive approach to mental health and well-being.

The realization that my personal struggles could be transformed into a ministry took root during a period of introspection. Embracing this perspective, I earned my BA in Psychology from Southwestern Adventist University and continued to earn my MA in Professional Counseling from Argosy University of Dallas. I achieved certification as a Bariatric Counselor. These educational achievements, combined with over 20 years of practical experience, positioned me to specialize in weight loss and behavior modification services, particularly for those in need of Bariatric Support.

As a professional dedicated to helping individuals find hope and healing, my commitment to advocacy extends beyond my professional life, particularly through my involvement with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Boris L. Henson Foundation and collaborate yearly with MTV’s Mental Health Action Day. This multifaceted journey, which began with an innate desire to assist others and evolved through education, personal growth, and community service, has equipped me with the tools to weave a narrative of resilience, growth, and purpose. It’s a narrative that I continue to share with those I counsel and support.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As the owner of Abundance of Hope Counseling, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas Registered in the State of Florida, and a Certified Bariatric Counselor with over 15 years of experience in the mental health field. My journey began with roles in social work, where I became a trusted referral source for family and friends seeking support.

What I find most exciting and special about my work is the transformative power it holds for individuals facing various challenges. My approach is rooted in the belief that our trials and tribulations can be channels for growth, and my mission is to guide others in harnessing their inner strength to overcome obstacles.

One of the unique aspects of my practice is the specialization in weight loss and behavior modification services, particularly for those in need of Bariatric Support. This specialization allows me to combine my expertise in mental health with a focus on physical well-being, providing a holistic approach to those on their weight loss journey.

In addition to my counseling services, I am a speaker and trainer, addressing topics such as weight loss, mental health, and advocacy. My involvement with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation reflects my dedication to making a positive impact beyond the counseling room.

Looking ahead, I am continually exploring new avenues to expand the reach of mental health support. Whether through innovative events, product/service launches, or community outreach, my goal is to create a space where individuals can find hope, healing, and the tools to build an abundant life.

Thank you for allowing me to share my passion and commitment to mental health and well-being.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back at the journey, three game-changers that stood out for me included:

P.U.S.H Pray until something happens. Continuing to Bounce Back and be Resilient: Life throws us many curveballs, especially when it comes to our mental, physical, and spiritual health. Being able to fall down and still get back up again. My advice for those early in their journey: don’t worry about the setbacks; see them as stair steps to help you get to where you are going. Learn from it, adapt to it, and keep your head up.

Empathize and Practice Active Listening: Counseling 101 – it’s all about vibing and creating a safe place with people. Getting where they’re coming from, truly listening – that’s the magic. Early on, practice being that calm, attentive listener. Forget about judgment, and dive deep into understanding.

Forever a Student (Continuous Learning and Adaptability): Mental health is always evolving. Stay in the loop, keep learning, and be ready to switch up and learn new therapies, and fresh approaches. So, my advice: stay curious, take on new challenges, and never get too comfy with the status quo.

And for the fresh faces on this journey:

(Build a Support System): Get yourself a cheer squad – mentors, etc. You’ll need backup on this journey.

(Seek Diverse Experiences): Try different avenues and meet diverse people.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
So, I’m kind of on the lookout for some awesome collaborations, especially in the speaking world, where mental health takes center stage. If you’re thinking you would like to team up I would love to speak more with you. Topics can also be aligned with “Gut and Mental Health”

Event Planners: Are you the mastermind behind events and would like to dive deep by shedding some light on the mental health aspects? It doesn’t matter what area you specialize in mental health is in everything. Let’s chat! I’m all about sharing stories and wisdom to make those events unforgettable.

Podcast Folks: If you’re running a podcast where mental health is the star, count me in! I would love to be a part of some great conversations that resonate with your listeners.

Workshop Planners: Planning some cool workshops or panels that mix in mental health? I’m game! I love being part of collaborations that bring different voices to the table.

Advocacy Heroes: Whether it’s mental health awareness or other causes close to your heart if you’re leading the charge, let’s team up! I’m all about using my voice for good along with my time, talent, and treasures.
