We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chloe Hunninghake. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chloe below.
Chloe, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is something that I believe most humble humans never truly overcome, but that is a part of what comes with success. When you are humble about what you have, outsiders may still see it as something other than what it is. Being from a small town, my tiers of success have always been looked at as becoming “famous” , “popular”, or “rich” by the people I grew up with. When in reality, most of me still fully feels like that unknown by the media, small town girl who liked to ride four-wheelers and get in the mud everyday. Although I do not feel like I have fully overcome imposter syndrome, no matter what words other people use, I like to focus on what my success has opened for every entrepreneur around the world who see’s my success and tells themself “if she can do it, so can I”. I have to remind myself that the goal of what I have built is to show the younger generations that you can come from something very small and make success of it. I don’t mind when they see me as “known” or “famous” (which famous is a far stretch, truly lol), but I always remind myself that even though I don’t feel those words, I should not feel like an imposter, and remember that what they see, is something inspiring. And I will forever be grateful for that.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Chloe Cosmetics is a hair and makeup company local to KCMO. The owner (hi, me, Chloe :)) travels all around the world for destination hair & makeup, the absolute dream of a job! My team of artists service the KC area, (and hop on a plane with me when needed for destinations ;)). Our most sought out service is wedding hair & makeup, but we also provide these services for any special event! With our hundreds of bookings a year, we are always looking to expand our team with talented and driven hair and makeup artists. We absolutely love getting the girlies ready for their special days! I mean, we all know getting ready is usually the best part of the day anyways 😉
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three things that impacted my journey the most were resilience, continued education, and customer service. Resilience is KEY when owning your own business, especially in the service industry. Because let’s face it, people can be rude! We’ve all done it and we’ve all received it. I remind myself everyday that we are all going through something, and one rude client, or even one rude comment on social media WILL NOT ruin my day, or my business. You have to be able to push through the bad to fully see all of the good. This goes right along with customer service! Being nice to people goes a very long way. Own up to your mistakes, do everything you can to make things right for your customers, and always do your best to have a good attitude! As said before we are all going through something, so even on the days you feel your worst, try your best to make sure you are still treating the people around you with kindness. Continued education is something that cannot be missed, especially in the artistry world. I took a 6 month break early on in my career, and when I came back, I felt like I was SO behind! Remember to keep up on the latest trends, sanitation, and marketing, to make sure you never fall back in your business!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking to collaborate with vendors within the destination bridal industry! I have a great package currently available for all destination brides, where they receive a free trial for their rehearsal when booking me for their destination wedding! Even if the bride is local to KC, and traveling out of state/country for their wedding, they can make use of their free trial at any time they like after officially booking with me. I have been able to get several opportunities for other vendors with my destination weddings coming up this year, and I absolutely love bouncing back and forth bookings with vendors to create this dream travel job for each other!
