Chloe, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
From a young age, I was taught a unique definition of success. In my family, triumph wasn’t measured by victories or high scores. Instead, we valued learning and personal growth. For instance, winning a chess match against my younger sisters wasn’t a cause for celebration. However, if I came close to beating my parents, whom I usually lost to, it was a significant achievement. The same principle was applied to reading. The number of pages didn’t matter; what was important was the knowledge and insights we gained. This mindset has been a cornerstone of my life from the beginning.
One of my most memorable college experiences was ironically tied to my lowest grade, a B+ in Foundations of Critical Inquiry: Self & Context. This course was a confluence of my weaknesses: writing, expressing vulnerability through my writing, self-understanding, and shaping my identity. The challenge was immense.
I started with a grade of 80 on my first paper and diligently worked my way up to a 95. Despite finishing the course with a B+, this achievement stands out in my mind. It represents a journey of substantial personal growth and is the first thing I recall about my freshman year. This experience reaffirms my belief that it’s the journey and the growth that truly matter.
This resilience has become a pivotal asset in my role as a founder. I see every “no” not as a rejection, but as a “next opportunity.” I consistently question and challenge these rejections, exploring how to transform them into affirmations. This mindset has cultivated a culture of relentless feedback within my company, BOND. When I see our numbers dip, it’s not a setback but an exciting chance to learn and evolve. This approach transforms obstacles into opportunities for both personal and professional growth, continually driving development forward.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, there are three key qualities and areas of knowledge that have been crucial: falling in love with the problem, not the solution; maintaining discipline; and surrounding myself with the right people. Each of these played a vital role in shaping my path and driving my success.
1. Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution: This mindset has been a game-changer. The entrepreneurial journey is filled with evolving challenges and shifting landscapes. Solutions that seem perfect today may become obsolete tomorrow. By focusing on the problem and staying committed to solving it, I’ve been able to adapt and evolve my solutions over time. For those just starting, it’s essential to ensure you’re passionate about solving a real, significant problem, not just enamored with a cool idea. Validate the problem, understand the market opportunity, and be prepared to pivot your solutions as needed.
2. Discipline: Success isn’t just about having great ideas; it’s about consistently executing them. Setting up and sticking to a routine has been vital. Consistency in your work is key, and this extends to setting up reliable processes for your company. For newcomers, I’d advise establishing a disciplined work ethic and routines early on. This consistency will be the backbone of your venture, providing stability and reliability both for you and your team.
3. Surround Yourself with the Right People: Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey, especially for first-time founders. Having the right circle is invaluable. Surround yourself with experienced mentors who can provide guidance, hardworking peers to maintain motivation, supporters who believe in your vision, and honest advisors who will give you unfiltered feedback. This network will not only multiply your resources and opportunities but also keep you grounded and focused. Above all, when building your team, prioritize finding individuals whose values and goals resonate with yours. It’s crucial to ensure that your team members are not only skilled but also deeply committed, ready to ride the waves with you, whether in times of triumph or challenge, for the long journey ahead, spanning the next 5-10 years.
For those at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey, my advice is to actively cultivate these qualities and networks. Seek out problems that ignite your passion, establish disciplined routines and processes, and build a supportive and skilled network. These elements, combined with your unique vision and perseverance, will be instrumental in navigating the challenging yet rewarding path of entrepreneurship.
