We were lucky to catch up with Chris Hamer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
There is no reward with out risk. I made a decision years ago that if I was going to work for myself and earn a living and gain the respect of my family and peers I would have to take on a certain level of risk.
Risk is frightening, the fear or reality that you will fail is very real. That fear is something I will never overcome. It’s more something I will learn to adjust as I go along day to day. It’s like most things we do that will create discomfort, we take it one day at a time, till it becomes easier.
Really, truly understand what you are doing and what the consequences are with the risk.
If your gonna take risk, make sure your willing to fail and loose everything.. if your ok with that then maybe your ready to take that risk. If not, we’ll I wouldn’t move forward.
At the end of the day a dear friend told me the answer is always No if you don’t ask. And sometimes asking is the first step in taking risks. Don’t be afraid to ask.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
For the past 16 years I’ve been a traveling artist attending comic book conventions, music festivals and the oddities convention going by the moniker “Urbnpop” . The last five years, I’ve been working for scout comics drawing my creator owned comic “The Adventures of Byron” most recently I opened a brick and mortar Art Gallery and Comic book shop called “Urbnpop comics company” in Acworth Georgia.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Trust your instincts, find a trustworthy partner who believes in you, and take risks when they feel right.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Malcom Gladwells “ outliers” it taught me that with enough focus, trust and belief that I’m doing the right thing for me and my family that I can accomplish those dreams that seem too far away to.
