We recently connected with Chris Heidel and have shared our conversation below.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a large format photographer in Columbus Ohio that mainly focuses on wet plate collodion aka tin type photography. I operate a studio in Clintonville, called Highlife Tin Types. It is one of the only full time tin type studios in the state and allows me to really share the processes every step of the way with everyone that comes in. The space allows me to capture portraits, family photos, pets and just about anything you could think of!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think my biggest skill or quality was and is, not being afraid to figure things out on my own. Trial and error has been so huge for me in learning this process and getting comfortable. It’s taught me that there really is no substitute for just doing it. Beyond that, i’m constantly looking for new information and trying to immerse myself in as much as I can with the process. Whether that is reading or research to just keeping up and following other photographers to see what I can pick up.
The only advice i’d feel qualified to give to anyone starting out doing anything, is just to actually start doing it. Use whatever you have or can get your hands on to do the thing you want, and go from there.
