We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Mcauley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
The drive to succeed in an extremely difficult market. Discipline is building healthy and progressive habits which will lead to being prepared for opportunities that come your way. I develop a training schedule for my film making, writing and for video game coding. Developing these diverse skills has been the keys to my success as a creative.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Chris McAuley writes prose novels, magazine short stories, video and tabletop games, and audio dramas. Together with Bram Stoker’s Great-Grand nephew Dacre Stoker, he has created the StokerVerse franchise. He has penned the sequel to Dracula, which will be released by Scar Comics later this year. He also collaborated with Babylon 5 actress Claudia Christian to create a science fiction universe currently being fleshed out and coming along nicely as a series of games, novels, and comic books. In addition to this, Chris has worked on Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, and, most recently, the Terminator franchise.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Understanding the process of creating a product
Writing in a wide variety of genres (Crime, Western, Horror, Sci-Fi and Romance) as well as in different formats (Poetry, Prose Novels, Short Stories, Video Games, Comic Books, Tabletop Games, Film and Audio Dramas)
Understanding how to broker a business deal.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I have recently become the co-owner and Managing Partner of XG-3 Productions. This team comprises of award-winning writers, technical consultants and producers. This was my first foray into film and I needed to understand the business of film and tv. I am now fortunate to have won several awards with XG-3 for our upcoming short sci-fi film – The Stranded Warrior. I also have 4 more short films going into production.
