Meet Chris Murphy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

The short answer: I haven’t. I’ve just gotten comfortable with the idea that I don’t have to know everything about everything I do. I don’t have to be the best, or an expert, to also be good at something.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I created my floral design studio after getting laid off from a job I invested a lot into. I was burned out, unfulfilled and over it. So I took my experience and created Flower Song LA, which specializes in visual storytelling through the creation of sustainable floralscapes and installations.

Leading this company as an advertising veteran and career-creative, we take a bold and edgy approach to color, texture and form in every space we transform. We specialize in high-profile clientele, brands and retail/hospitality accounts- creating everything from weekly recurring deliveries to large-scale event installations and sculptures.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Critical Thought
Empathy
A “yes and…” attitude.

Don’t take everything at face value. Think everything through. Poke holes. Allow yourself to feel deeply. Approach everything and everyone with the intention of building together, verses tearing apart alone.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Sales is a huge challenge for for me personally. I’m flat out bad at it. I’m a creative/creator and I’ve always been uncomfortable with blind or cold sales pitches. I’m a fantastic closer, but I can’t network or cold connect to save my life. So I’m working on getting better at delegating that aspect of the job to people who are good at it, and “letting go” more easily. It’s a work in progress.
