We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christa Camarillo She/Her a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christa, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience stems from doing internal work and seeking support to help me understand how to navigate hard things.
Accumulated life experiences play a significant role in shaping our approach to life’s obstacles. Embracing difficult challenges with an attitude of curiosity and vulnerability offers valuable opportunities to gain insights, tools, and strategies for personal growth. After overcoming hard times, I document and speak about my emotions to better prepare for future difficulties, drawing from the familiarity of past experiences. My achievements and resilience stem from acknowledging failures and recognizing recurring patterns, stressing the belief that life will present similar lessons until we learn from them, evolve, or overlook them, and endure the consequences.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
With over 20 years of experience in the healthcare, business, and coaching sectors, my career has been shaped by challenges and personal tragedies such as sexual assault, a near-life-ending cycling accident, and losing my home and job after Hurricane Katrina, which tested my resilience. These experiences, which almost took my life and dashed my dreams, have become tools that I use to overcome, including to assist others in leading meaningful and purposeful lives.
My unique approach to stress management and holistic well-being, which involves using physical activity for healing and enhanced performance, guiding individuals away from alcohol misuse, burnout, and self-imposed limitation, and instilling habits and techniques for nurturing a positive mindset, sets me apart in the field. I don’t just offer tailored strategies, but also provide individual attention and customization, ensuring each client feels cared for and understood.
After a brief hiatus due to relocation just before the global pandemic, I am thrilled about the relaunch of my business, Retrain, LLC. I am excited to be able to empowering healthcare professionals, women, and high achievers through personalized my coaching programs.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have served me well are vulnerability, curiosity, and honesty. Growing up in a military family and a generation where families don’t often talk about personal matters, I’ve had to push myself in uncomfortable ways. Through my challenges and hard times, I’ve learned that vulnerability is a superpower and that true change happens when we can be vulnerable.
Life has also taught me that change is constant. Maintaining curiosity and approaching situations with an open mind fosters growth.
Finally, it is almost impossible to be authentic without honesty. When we are honest about who we are, we can face our limitations and leverage our strengths, allowing us to show up with authenticity and clarity. Embracing high-powered perceptions of ourselves requires honesty, which ultimately leads to growth.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Collaboration and community play a vital role in achieving success. The power of collective effort and shared values, particularly within a growth-oriented mindset, cannot be underestimated. I firmly believe there is abundant space for everyone to flourish, and supporting each other only enhances our collective journey toward success. In my pursuit of collaboration, I am especially drawn to working with women, specifically those from diverse backgrounds, including women of color and individuals within the LGBTQIA community. As a queer woman of color, I recognize the unique strength and value that our communities possess, and I am passionate about harnessing these qualities to make a positive impact on the world.
