Meet Christa Vessell

We were lucky to catch up with Christa Vessell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Christa , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?

When you become a mom, finding the time for yourself can not only be difficult but sometimes impossible! We often find ourselves putting everyone in our family first. We can feel lost and out of touch with who we once were prior to having kids. I knew I wasn’t the only mom experiencing these types of feelings. Motherhood can bring upon a joy that is indescribable but it can also bring upon feelings of isolation, sadness, and confusion, That’s why I created mommish! A safe space for moms to come together, take back some time for themselves, and find a community that gets it. For my own self care, I like to do mini getaways, get lost in a good book, or treat myself to a solo coffee date. Self care is SO important and vital to success.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My business plan is simple. Make moms feel appreciated!
mommish does this through vetting and handpicking amazing specialists and serving them to our moms on a silver platter. We host monthly workshops led by various top tier specialists who are here to help us through some of the hardships of motherhood. All workshops are meant to feel safe, kid friendly, and meant to be a space where you can find a new mom friend, have your burning questions answered by credible specialists, and leave feeling empowered and reassured. Social media can feel so overwhelming and can lead us to feel like we’re doing it all wrong. Our goal is to remind our moms you’re doing a great job and to leave them feeling heard, connected, and confident.

In addition to these amazing workshops, we have a mommish membership program! This is geared towards the moms who are wanting to take some time back for themselves. Happier mama means happier family. Our membership grants you a thick pink platinum membership card which can be used at over 20 businesses who want to make you feel appreciated by offering you discounts, just for being a mom. Because mom, you deserve it. On top of these insane discounts, you will always receive 50% off any mommish workshops and an exclusive invite to our members only annual party. A time to celebrate our moms and all that they do!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My big three important takeaway from starting my own business are as follows :

How to spot and work with key people! Always trust your gut and find people who are excited about what you do, are reliable, and want to grow with you. It’s so important to have a supportive team who shares the same goal of making it to the finish line. It may be hard, but let go of those who want to dim your light.

Time management is another big one. New entrepreneurs often find themselves trying to save as much money as possible which means wearing multiple hats if not all the hats. I think it’s really important to focus and hone in on what you excel at and putting the time and energy into your strengths. When it comes to other areas that may not be your strong suit, don’t be afraid to invest in those areas to help push you forward. For me personally, running a social media account felt like another world. Reels, engagement, algorithms….finding someone who specializes in that vs me spending tons of time and shifting my focus to work on social media didn’t make sense. This will serve you better in the long run.

Last but not least, confidence and consistency. You have to be your biggest supporter! It’s so scary to try and start something new, but if it was easy everyone would be doing it. You will inevitably experience highs and lows. Champion and celebrate the highs. Remember, you can’t have the highs without the lows. Always stay learning! Pay attention and grow from your mistakes but remember to always be your biggest cheerleader!

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one challenge or obstacle I face is having to remind myself IT WILL WORK OUT IF I WANT IT TO! I can be my biggest obstacle when times get rough. Some challenges or obstacles can make me question if any of this is even worth it. Working full time, raising two littles, and starting a new company is honestly NUTS! I sleep very little and every day I’m constantly thinking about how to evolve and push mommish to the next level. It’s hard in the short term but I know in the long term it will all be worth it. My goal is to have a life where I’m present for my kids, can help connect and empower other moms, and remind us all that we’re not alone. Moms deserve it all!
