We were lucky to catch up with Christalyne Causey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christalyne, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think it comes from the way I was raised. My parents were extremely young when they had me and both come from poverty. I watched them work hard, struggle, but never give up. My maternal grandmother helped to raise me as well. As an immigrant, she came from nothing, but taught me the importance of education, believing it would be my ticket to a happier, healthier life. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, let alone receive a Master’s Degree, While my grandmother didn’t live to see me finish my Doctorate, it was she who encouraged me to go all the way. When I think of all the roadblocks I have had in life and feel frustrated, I just have to remember how far my family has come to be grateful and keep moving forward.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of Bare Aesthetics Skincare & Nutrition where we focus on beauty and wellness from a holistic standpoint. I believe that beauty is not just about how you look, but also how you feel.
As a clinical nutritionist, I often discuss diet and lifestyle with my skincare clients, educating them on how the skin “talks” and will relay any internal issues that may be going on. As someone who specializes in hormonal acne and aging, addressing gut health and diet can help resolve many of the inflammatory issues we see on the skin.
I started my business working with male body builders struggling with hormonal body acne and have since evolved. While I still work with many men and teens, my practice has shifted to include more women, especially mom’s struggling with their skin, post-baby melasma (brown spots from pregnancy hormones), hormonal acne and anti-aging. This led me to develop my own product line specifically for adult acne, brightening and anti-aging, because nobody should have to deal with both wrinkles and pimples.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My education and career path seem very scattered. However, having a background in healthcare, specifically nutrition, hormones, and biochemistry, has helped me immensely in transitioning to skincare. I am able to use my knowledge of the human body and the impact of diet to help my clients get much better results than they would from just addressing their skin concerns topically. In addition, without my chemistry background, I don’t think I would have ever attempted to create my own product line. That knowledge was invaluable. For others thinking of changing careers and afraid they have wasted years developing skills that they will no longer use, chances are you have more experience and knowledge that can carry over and help you in the future than you realize.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The skincare industry is growing rapidly and with that, the competition is increasing. There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t see a new corporate spa pop up and several solo estheticians start their own business. Standing out has never been harder and I have never been the best at self-promotion, especially as a mom of two babies who doesn’t want to spend a ton of time on social media. That is why it has been so important for me to cultivate true relationships with my clients, build an excellent referral program, and give so much more information than just basic skincare so that they are getting the results they are looking for. Ultimately, this is a relationship business. I want to help my clients to feel confident in the skin they are in. Having them know, like and trust me, then over delivering on my services and products has been the best way for them to reach their goals. When they are happy, they refer.
