We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christen Marbury. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christen below.
Hi Christen, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence was developed slowly overtime. I have always been plus size, even as a kid, which caused me to be bullied, have low confidence/self esteem, and not like myself or my body. As I got older, I started looking up to one of my older cousins who was also plus sized but she was FABULOUS. She took me shopping, and for the first time, I saw clothes that I thought were cute and flattering, which instantly boosted my confidence. Through discovering more places where I could find affordable, cute, plus size clothes, I found my style and my confidence continued to grow. I began dressing up and posting pictures on Instagram and saw other women with bodies like mine on there. All-in-all, I discovered my confidence through fashion, and I try to be that representation for other plus size people now!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Christen Marbury, and I was raised in Detroit! I am a social worker, plus size model and social media influencer! I am a published model, have been in New York Fashion Week, and have amassed over 16.6K followers on social media. Aside from my hobbies, I have a passion for helping others and my community of Detroit! Through this passion, I have launched a mental health nonprofit, Self Care Sanctuary, that is dedicated to improving mental health outcomes in Detroit! I want to make a positive impact on my community and in the lives of others!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Confidence, adaptability, connection. All of these skills can be established over time through personal growth and experiences. You can grow your confidence through positive affirmations, rewiring your brain/how you think, and getting inspiration from others. You can become more adaptable through being willing to work with others and adapt to changes. You can establish connections with your community and community members through attending events, connecting with other residents, volunteering, and so much more!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Always! In my work with Self Care Sanctuary, we are looking for organizations and business owners to collaborate with! We would love to connect with individuals in mental health, maternal health, health-focused services/businesses, and other Detroit nonprofits that align with our focus!
