Meet Christian Ramirez

We were lucky to catch up with Christian Ramirez recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

Like writer’s block, overcoming creativity blocks has been a journey for me. I’ve found that changing my environment can be incredibly helpful; sometimes, just stepping outside or working in a different setting sparks new ideas. To get into the right mindset, I take showers and dress nicely, almost as if I’m going to work. I even put on shoes to help my mind associate these actions with productivity. This simple routine tricks my brain into thinking I’m working, often leading to breakthroughs in my creative process. Lastly, I remind myself that creativity isn’t a linear journey. It’s okay to take breaks and let ideas marinate; sometimes, the best ideas come when I’m not actively trying to force them.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m passionate about storytelling, and I’ve dedicated my career to film directing and writing. After graduating from film school, I directed a short film that opened doors for me, including a mentorship fellowship with FilmIndependent’s Project
. Since then, I’ve directed various projects, including a recent spec commercial and a promotional piece that earned an award.

What excites me most about my work is its ability to evoke emotions and create meaningful experiences for audiences. Cinema has the power to connect people, and I strive to create stories that resonate on a personal level. My current project is a low-budget suspense/thriller feature film titled “Dark Transmission,” which explores themes of technology, personal conflict, and the search for connection in a chaotic world.

I also recently self-published an anthology series called The Late Hour, Stories for the Insomniac, which delves into urban suspense. The second volume is now available on Amazon, and I’m excited to share more stories that capture the strange and weird aspects of life. In addition, I plan to create engaging content for my TikTok channel featuring my ventriloquist puppet, Billy Wood, who reviews movies and shares his unique perspective on life as a puppet.

As I continue to develop my brand, I aim to connect with a broader audience and explore new opportunities in film and literature. I’m always looking for ways to expand my reach and engage with those who appreciate the art of storytelling through events, workshops, or collaborative projects.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I believe three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: effective time management, prioritizing tasks, and the ability to adapt.

Time management has been crucial in balancing my creative projects, work commitments, and personal life. I’ve learned that setting clear deadlines for myself, even for individual projects, helps maintain momentum and keeps me accountable.

Another key area is prioritizing tasks. With so many ideas and projects vying for attention, I focus on what aligns with my long-term goals. I create lists to identify the most important tasks and tackle them first. This approach maximizes productivity and reduces the overwhelm that can come from juggling multiple responsibilities.

For those early in their journey, I advise developing a consistent routine that incorporates these skills. Set aside dedicated time for your creative work, and don’t be afraid to say no to distractions. Learning to prioritize effectively can make a significant difference in achieving your goals and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the process, stay focused, and celebrate your progress!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to be incredibly supportive, not only in my filmmaking endeavors but also in my journey as an openly gay man. From a young age, they encouraged my passion for storytelling and creativity, nurturing my interests and providing me with the resources to pursue my dreams.

Their acceptance of my identity has strengthened my confidence and self-expression. Knowing their unconditional support allowed me to explore my creativity freely and authentically. This foundation has empowered me to embrace my true self in my personal life and artistic work. I’m grateful to have parents who champion my pursuits and stand by me every step of the way.
