We were lucky to catch up with Christian Vázquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
At first, my focus in life was my family. They were everything to me.
Then me and my ex broke up, and it has been a battle to see my kids since then.
I fell apart emotionally, and I spent some time in a very dark space. My music was gone.
But then my brother, Kultra, told me “It’s time to rap again.”
I said, “I don’t know what to talk about.” He said, “You know pain now, so give it a try.”
I decided to embrace my pain, and make music for my kids. And the rest is history.
I am a conscious rapper. I sing what I live. I don’t write my music, it comes from the heart.
My music is not for the club. It is not for you to dance to.
My music is just a father, reaching through time and space.
I’m trying to tell my kids that my love for them is the most important thing in my world.
My kids are my music. My kids are my life. My kids are my purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The most important reason I make my music is for my kids, so I drop an album or an EP on my loved ones’ birthdays.
I time my major releases with important days. Their birthdays that I missed. The Father’s Days when I couldn’t see them.
All the special days where not having my kids in my life hurts the most, those are the days I reach for them the hardespp
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1 – I would tell anyone starting out that the most important thing is to create a unique style from the heart.
Create songs that only you could make. Sing about what you are passionate about.
When I first did music, my rapping was about street life… you can find those songs anywhere.
Then when I lost my kids, for a while I didn’t make music at all.
But when I started doing my music for my kids, it was like no one else’s music. My style was born.
2 – The second thing I would say is to be consistent. I sing every day.
Someday I hope my kids discover that I created at least 5 or 6 songs for them EVERY DAMN DAY.
So that they know that even though they got ripped out of my life, I fought for them.
I learned that the more you create, the better you get. Stay consistent.
3 – The third thing I would say is don’t wait until you have all the best equipment.
At the beginning, I sang into my phone, in my car. Because I was homeless.
I’m still making music in my car. But now I have a microphone and headphones.
One step at a time. You can start recording with whatever you’ve got.
If you’re serious, make it happen.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Takezo is my producer. He creates the beats that I use.
I give him all the credit. Without him, there wouldn’t be Shawtyquit.
He’s the man who gave me the green light.
His beats match my flow. He created the unique sound that makes my music.
I didn’t own any copyrights to his music, so he gave me the exclusive right to drop this music on every platform.
He believes that my style is going to hit. It means so much that he likes my music. That he believes in me.
