We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christina Flach. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christina below.
Christina, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome is a universal challenge that many of us encounter, regardless of the industry we work in. Even the most prepared, skilled, or seasoned professionals can grapple with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. When I began freelancing as a makeup artist nearly three decades ago, I never imagined my work would gain global recognition. At the time, focusing on bridal parties while juggling the responsibilities of being a full-time mom to two babies felt fulfilling enough. It was only later in my career, after working with A-list celebrities, tech tycoons, and politicians, that the question of “Do I belong here?” arose. Ironically, it happened after I had over 20 years of experience and proper qualifications. Instead of dwelling on these negative uncertainties, I chose to celebrate my personal achievements and remind myself that creativity is subjective and continuously evolving. Embracing ongoing education, regardless of the subject, became the bedrock of my self-assurance. Realizing that I earned my position through hard work and dedication, rather than any handouts, was an empowering revelation that helped me conquer Imposter Syndrome and embrace the triumphs of my journey.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Christina Flach, a San Francisco-based celebrity hair and makeup artist. After starting my career as a makeup artist in 1995, I founded my own cosmetic line, Pretty Girl Makeup. I love creating looks that enhance my clients’ natural beauty, making them feel like the best version of themselves. Beyond my career, I am deeply committed to various charitable causes, including the Northern Lights School, Beau Friedman Foundation, and Sepsis Alliance. I am in the process of creating a new makeup and skincare line, I’m Too Busy. Working closely with a beauty chemist creating the ultimate three-step process of ‘reverse cleansing.’ I am represented by Ford Artists in LA, NYC & Miami, and am available for travel worldwide to continue pursuing my passion for beauty and making a positive impact wherever I go.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the key factors contributing to my success is that I never turn down jobs! I’ve always had an unwavering commitment to accepting every opportunity that comes my way. Sometimes I am paid incredibly well, other times not so great, and sometimes not at all. It’s important to understand that not all projects offer high pay, but each one presents opportunities for growth. Collaborating with other creatives has allowed me to build an impressive portfolio and express my artistic abilities. A second key aspect is professionalism, which is paramount in my career. I ensure I maintain a positive attitude, arrive on time, and consistently deliver exceptional results. Surprisingly, being punctual, doing my job diligently, and being easy to work with has earned me the respect and appreciation of photographers and producers, leading to more exciting opportunities and fantastic projects. I nurture lasting relationships with my clients and colleagues by expressing gratitude and appreciation for being hired.
Lastly, I proactively keep in touch with people I’ve worked with. Periodically checking for upcoming shoots that may require my hair and makeup services. Responding quickly to my agent’s inquiries is a priority, as it highlights my reliability and responsiveness in an industry where swift communication is crucial.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
An ideal client for me is someone who trusts my expertise and allows me the creative freedom to do my job without constant questioning. I appreciate clients who are open to exploring different makeup options and styles. However, it’s important to strike a balance because how my clients feel about their appearance can significantly impact their confidence and performance in front of the camera. Therefore, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction with the final look is crucial for a successful collaboration.
