We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christina Lane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christina below.
Christina, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Even though I have enjoyed what most people would perceive as a lot of success on the exterior that is rarely the way I have seen myself. While I had impressive job titles I never prioritized fields where there was a high income available. I also had a complex childhood and a divorce at 38. On some level how other’s saw me was never quite how I was able to see myself. When I got up the courage to leave my stable career for online entrepreneurship it wasn’t with dollar signs in mind still. I wanted to see how much change and influence I could have in somatic coaching. The few one to one clients I had taken had seen crazy success. So even in the early days I coaching I felt very dislocated from how I needed to show up online to sell coaching. I used my own embodiment and somatic tools to fix that problem. Even though my personal life and my coaching matched up it was really my own feelings that weren’t lined up with reality. Sitting in the discomfort of my own emotions and making sure I was making business moves and life moves that I could feel good about helped me move into the place where the success others saw possible for me feels real in my body.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I help women and men create deeper connections in relationships and with themselves. Embodiment coaching is a somatic (body based) support-therapy that heals anxiety, avoidance and reactivity.
In addition to curriculum for men and women, I see clients for 1-1 coaching sessions. My most popular offers are a low cost monthly membership for women and a 21 days of embodiment meditations course for men and couples. I began my own healing journey in my 30’s and after trying many traditional (and fringe) methods to soothe latent triggers from old trauma in ways that changed my real life problems…
I still felt stuck.
While therapy helped me understand and heal Trauma, it also left me feeling in some ways like I was stuck. I didn’t get the orientation towards making real changes in my life that I wanted. I needed tools I could use by myself to shift dynamics in real time. I also wanted something faster and honestly… maybe sexier? It felt disappointing that self healing was so dry.
I was exhausted by the list of ‘healthy’ communication strategies and super human qualities that I needed to spend my life aspiring toward. I just wanted to feel like myself. I wanted to just wake up feeling ok everyday. I didn’t want to trade an exciting, erotic, deep life experience for something ‘healthy’ either. I have always known the the hardest parts of my personality (my shadow) are the flip sides of my greatest qualities. I wanted something that felt like harvesting more of me, not taking away. My experience as a woman was already so full of trying to be less or smaller.
I started to explore my options. I knew my main problem was that I couldn’t control my trigger responses or listen to my intuition when I needed it most. So I was looking for a nervous system regulation method that matched my personality and style. I found Embodiment to be the most effective and quickest method to soothing my nervous system (so that I can make values centered moves in real time) and tapping into my intuition.
My interpretation of embodiment is simply connecting with an ability that you were born with. A soothing essential nature of self regulation and self attunement that you have always possessed and can tap into at any moment. I became certified in Embodiment Coaching through the School of Embodied Arts based in Queensland, Australia. I have created my core curriculums, through the lens of both my own experiences and the stories of the many men & women I have worked with. My background in education heavily supports my client work. I hold an M.Ed. degree in curriculum design. My background in exceptional education and working with traits of giftedness often helps me build connections for my clients.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My success has been mostly based on my ability to just keep going and learning. I can learn faster and make better corrections if I am tracking data well. When I understand what Medium articles or Instagram posts really resonate I can then move in the right direction more quickly. I also have found the right coaching invaluable. I am definitely a person that needs support to see a clear picture and work through the places where I am the bottleneck.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love the book Unbound: A Woman’s Guide to Power by Kasia Urbaniak. It is specific examples of new ways to communicate powerfully and it was a big wake up call to me as a person about the ways I was being impacted by using passive communication. It also shifted what I believe to be nice or kind in many ways.
