We recently connected with Christina Major and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose has changed immensely over the years. I realized early on that I had many passions. Art being at the forefront. I took this art with me into fashion school in New York City. Focusing on footwear and small leather goods, I found myself among people who inspired me, sometimes scared me, and in a city that constantly challenged me.
My partner and I used to live in this great apartment in the Bronx. One day, during a time of anxious unemployment, I used the natural light in our apartment and took some of my very first pictures of meals that I cooked. I wrote my first recipes during this time as well. Here we go, I’m showing creativity but via an avenue that I hadn’t really explored much – through food. This was circa 2013 and I was very anti-social media so posting wasn’t really my style, yet. I even asked my cousin to help build a website for me in exchange for babysitting her kids. Cooking and writing recipes led to diving into nutrition. Podcasts (some of my first I’ve ever listened to) books, and blogs, really anything that I could find during the time helped me learn more about the subject. Designing footwear still meant a lot to me but this seemed like something I had to really focus on.
My mission is to help people heal by simply, getting more plants on their plates. My personal way of going about this has been through veganism. My partner and I ended up moving to Philadelphia and went vegan together in 2017. Learning the intricacies of veganism (and yes, there is something new to learn every single day) has opened my eyes into what can be a kinder, healthier, and greener world. I found that this way of nourishment not only supports our health but also helps take care of our planet and protects the animals we share it with. I went back to school and learned more about nutrition and about coaching. I use nutrition coaching to share what I have learned over the years and see how it can be implemented in other people’s lives. Just a few health benefits that I have noticed since going vegan have been my migraines that used to debilitate me are almost non-existent now. I had terrible menstrual symptoms that went away, and I shed excess stubborn weight by nourishing myself with nutrient-dense plants. I wasn’t even in search of healing, but that’s exactly what it did for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Nutrition coaching has been such an amazing journey so far. I get really excited to talk about all the things that I personally have been practicing for about a decade. Grocery shopping and cooking tips, deep dives into nutrition, choosing healthier options on a menu, or navigating all the noise that’s out there on social media. I like to also take an “off plate” approach as well and check in with clients about stress management, sleep health, and mindfulness techniques.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Go with your passion – jumping into a career that doesn’t align with your values may not be for you. If you want to own a business for instance, ask yourself what brought you to this idea. Is there a specific passion that you have, something that the world has to see, something that people can genuinely gain from this? Or do you just want to start a business?
Tap into your skills – for mine it was my creativity. I used it in 4 hour long art classes, footwear construction classes, design jobs, and I used it to cook. I cook for our household and even meal prepped for local families. Creating nutritious recipes and cooking on a daily basis allows me to share tips and tricks that can help others get started.
Learn from your jobs and opportunities – is this how you would run a company, lead a meeting, work as a team?

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents allowed me to see that I could use my creativity for work, for fun, and that I could be my own boss if I wanted to someday. Our home was full of art and craft supplies. My mother would weave her own baskets, create her own greeting cards, and tend to her garden. My father designed and built beautiful homes and was always building fixtures/furniture for our own home as well. I currently use his old architecture desk to coach my clients on (and sketch when I want to).
