We recently connected with Christine Cowern and have shared our conversation below.
Christine, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome in the real estate industry is incredibly common. After all, based on what people post on social media, it seems like everyone is super successful and selling dozens of homes. In my experience, most of it is smoke and mirrors and marketing, not reality, but if you don’t know any better, it’s very easy to fall into the imposter syndrome trap.
I’ve been in the real estate industry full-time since 2007, before Instagram or TikTok were created, so by the time these platforms came along I already had a large database and a dedicated base of past clients. I think because I already had a strong business foundation under me, I could look past the noise and focus on what really matters, which is servicing clients at a high level. That’s more important than anything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the Founder and Managing Partner of The Christine Cowern Real Estate Team, an all-female team of experienced, passionate, client-centric realtors working across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. We help urban professionals build their real estate wealth through strategically buying, renovating and investing in property.
Have we won lots of sales awards? Yes. But that’s not why we do what we do. We do it for our clients so that they can experience the financial rewards (and peace of mind!) that come from working with agents and support staff who are at the top of their game.
I love the diversity that real estate brings – every day is different, and as someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, the pace and variety are right up my alley. It’s absolutely wonderful to support someone at a high level to achieve their real estate goals. After all, real estate sales go way beyond just buying and selling homes – it’s about guiding people through life-changing decisions, building wealth and shaping communities.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities have been most impactful: 1) Integrity – real estate is a relationship business, and building trust is everything. Always choosing the ethical path, even when it’s not the easiest or most profitable, has set me and my team apart and helped create our success. 2) Relentless work ethic – I never settle. Whether it’s staying ahead of market trends, refining my negotiation skills, or mentoring my team, I’m always pushing for better. Hard work, combined with a willingness to adapt and grow, has been key. 3) High standards – Excellence isn’t just a goal; it’s the standard I set for myself and my team. From marketing properties to client communication, every detail matters, and that commitment to quality has built our reputation.
In terms of my advice for people early in their journey, I’d say always put relationships over transactions, be transparent, outwork your competition, embrace challenges instead of shying away from them and set high expectations for yourself. If you don’t, no one else will.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Our ideal client is serious about real estate – whether as an investment, a home, or a stepping stone to something bigger. They’re strategic & forward-thinking – they want to make smart, informed decisions and stay ahead of trends; they’re committed to growth – whether it’s building wealth or improving their home, they see real estate as a long-term game; they’re decisive & ready to act – they don’t just dream about opportunities; they take action when the right one appears; they trust our expertise – they value professional guidance and understand that working with a knowledgeable team leads to better results; and they’re relationship-oriented – they see real estate as more than just a transaction and appreciate a long-term partnership.
