We were lucky to catch up with Christine Hettinger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christine , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
In situations where I am the only one who looks like me, I have learned to embrace my uniqueness as a strength. First, it is essential to cultivate self-awareness and recognize my own skills and experiences. I have also learned to actively listen and ask questions to build better connections with others and understand their perspectives.
Moreover, I find it crucial to be authentic. By bringing my own viewpoint and culture to the table, I can open new avenues of discussion and become a valuable part of the conversation. Networking and seeking mentorship have also been helpful; I often look for support networks to share experiences and learn from one another.
It takes courage to step up as a “lone representative,” but I’ve found that I can not only raise my voice but also amplify those who follow me. By remaining authentic and engaged, I can create positive change and encourage others to express their own voices.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a tattoo artist based in Hanau, I have the privilege of running my own studio, where I can express my creativity and connect with clients on a personal level. My work is not just about creating art on skin; it’s about telling stories, capturing emotions, and empowering individuals through my designs.
What excites me the most about my profession is the unique blend of artistry and personal connection. Each tattoo I create reflects the individuality of my clients and allows me to collaborate with them to bring their visions to life. Whether it’s a meaningful symbol, a tribute, or simply a beautiful piece of art, I cherish the trust my clients place in me.
Additionally, my experiences as a guest artist have broadened my horizons significantly. Traveling to different studios and meeting artists from diverse backgrounds has enriched my skill set and artistic style. I’ve learned new techniques and gained insights that I bring back to my own studio, constantly evolving my craft.
I’m also thrilled to announce some upcoming events where I’ll be showcasing my work and participating in conventions. These opportunities allow me to connect with fellow artists and fans of tattoo art, and I am excited to share my journey and the evolution of my brand with a wider audience.
Overall, I want folks to know that my studio is a welcoming space for self-expression and creativity, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue making art that resonates with my clients and the community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe three qualities have been most impactful in my journey as a tattoo artist: my specialization in Chicano black and grey color tattoos, my empathy towards clients, and the diverse experiences I’ve gained by working in different countries and studios.
Firstly, my dedication to mastering Chicano art has allowed me to create unique pieces that resonate deeply with my clients. This specialization sets my work apart and showcases my commitment to the craft.
Secondly, empathy plays a crucial role in my approach to tattooing. Understanding my clients’ emotions and stories helps me translate their personal experiences into meaningful designs. Building this connection is vital in creating an environment where clients feel safe and valued.
Additionally, working in various countries and studios has provided me with a broader perspective on art and culture. This exposure has enriched my skills and enhanced my creativity, enabling me to draw inspiration from different styles and approaches.
For those starting their journey in tattoo artistry, my advice is simple: focus on your own journey. Don’t compare yourself to others; instead, find your own path and develop your unique style. It’s essential to stay true to yourself and not let anyone discourage you. Embrace the challenges, learn continuously, and trust in your ability to grow.
With these principles in mind, I’m also excited to share that I am opening a second studio soon, which will allow me to reach more clients and continue sharing my passion for tattoo art.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was their unwavering support, even when they had their doubts about the tattoo industry. They may not have known much about it, but they always believed in my passion and talent. This encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams, knowing that I had a solid foundation of support behind me.
Their willingness to stand by me, despite their uncertainties, taught me the importance of chasing my passion and believing in myself. It shows how vital a supportive environment is, especially in a field that can be unconventional. Their faith in my abilities helped me navigate challenges and ultimately flourish in my career as a tattoo artist.
